  1. ever since i upgraded, i keep getting a message "no sound device" and nothing can be dictated. i turn down the computer, it starts to work and then i get the error message.

What do you mean by "turn down"?

What other applications are running? What other icons are showing in the notification area?

  2. So, did you reproduce the problem ?

We've found a couple of problems in speech-to-text. The one that's causing your problems is probably due to a hard-coded time-out that's triggered when the speech-to-text processing takes too long. What's the duration of the audio file that you're loading?

Strange that your problem happened after only 30 seconds of processing though, because the time-out should be after one minute.

Is there any update to correct this issue ?

    We're working on it.

  3. Now I need to transcribe WMAs, and the playback is too fast -- sounds like Chip & Dale.

Does the recorder have different recording modes? e.g. Long play (LP) mode? Do you have the same problem if you switch to standard play (SP) mode?

The bug reporting page (Help -> "Send bug report") gives you the option of uploading a sample file, if you're able to.

  4. If you're running Express Scribe v 5.01 and your foot pedal usually works but you're having problems with pedal presses / releases sometimes being ignored, could you post your experiences here? We need to try and work why it's happening for some people and not for others. The more information you can post, the better. Things like:

    1. What are your PC specs? (CPU, RAM, OS, etc.)
    2. Can you post all the diagnostic information from Options -> Controller -> "Controller setup wizard..." -> Next -> "Show plug and play controller diagnostics"?
    3. Does the problem only happen on pedal presses? Releases? Both?
    4. Is the press / release ignored completely, or is there just a long delay before it's recognised?
    5. Does the problem happen always / often / occasionally / rarely? Is there a particular sequence of events you can use to reproduce it?
    6. Does it matter how long the audio is? How many channels it has? How long it's been playing?
    7. Can you reproduce the problem using the keyboard short-cuts, system-wide hot-keys, or mouse clicks, or does it only happen when using foot pedals?
    8. What are your settings in Options -> Controller -> "Tap lock"?
    9. What type of drive does your Options -> "Disk Usage" -> "Data folder" point to? Fixed (e.g. C:)? USB? Network shared?
    10. Does the Performance tab in Windows' Task Manager show high CPU usage when the problem happens?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I really want to get to the bottom of this.

    Thanks.

  5. Before both channels were loaded and could be muted as needed. That feature doesn't seem to work in 5.0. It seems to load only one channel, which can be muted, but that doesn't really do me any good as I really need both channels.

Have you reported the bug (Help -> Send Bug Report) and uploaded a sample file so the developers can try to reproduce the problem?

  6. I accomplished this by making all the live mics go to the left track and my mic go to the right track panned over as far as they could go.

Does that mean you're mixing down from four or five inputs to two channels? MSRS is targeted more at someone who wants to record each of those four or five inputs as separate channels. If you only want to record in stereo then you could probably find some simpler software than MSRS.

The Peavey works fine with Win7.

Have you confirmed that on your machine or is that information from another source?

when I hooked up the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra to the new computer, I was able to get all the tracks on the computer. I WAS NOT ONLY ABLE TO GET THE TWO MAIN TRACKS ON THE MSRS SOFTWARE.

Which software did you use to "get all the tracks"?

I have now been told that the drivers for the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra (ASIO)do not work with MSRS. That's curious, because the sound card that is suggested by nch to use with MSRS from Alto Edge is an M-Audio product and uses ASIO drivers.

Is this information from the AltoEdge website? Could you post the URL?

So it appears that MSRS does not work on Win 7.

Which version of MSRS were you running on your XP machine? Which version is on the Windows 7 machine?

  7. When I choose [Load Dictation File(s)], it doesn't recognize the file name which includes double byte characters.

Yes, this is a known issue which we hope to resolve in a future release.

If you'd like to be notified when a fixed version is released, please report the bug using the Help -> "Send Bug Report" menu item in Express Scribe, including your email address.

  8. how when in word doc do bookmark times from scribe come into word doc as need to transcribe interviews with difficult audio and need to bookmark unclear with times.

I think what you want are time-stamps. (Bookmarks are for jumping backwards and forwards in the audio.)

To paste the current playback position into a word processor as a time-stamp:

    • In Express Scribe, in Options -> Hot-Keys, add or change a hot-key and map it to the "Copy Time" command.
    • In your word processor, press the above hot-key combination (to copy the time-stamp to the clipboard), then Ctrl+V (to paste it into your document).

  9. Changes in Express Scribe v 5.01 for Windows:

    • Added: Philips Foot Control 2320 support.
    • Added: Philips SpeechMike Classic Plus 5272 support.
    • Added: Philips SpeechMike Pro Plus 5276 support.
    • Added: Generic USB Philips SpeechMike controller configuration, for limited support of models which aren't specifically supported.
    • Added: "Show plug and play controller diagnostics" link to "Controller Setup Wizard".
    • Fixed: Files attached to dictations weren't being sent as email attachments when using Dispatch.
    • Fixed: Paragraphs in the Notes window are no longer truncated to 260 characters.
    • Fixed: Controller button / pedal presses or releases were still sometimes being ignored.
    • Fixed: System-wide rewind hot-key no longer causes fast forwarding if pressed during playback.
    • Fixed: Stopping playback near the beginning of the recording while auto-backstep is enabled no longer causes the playback position to jump forwards.
    • Fixed: Step backwards or forwards five seconds no longer causes skipping.
    • Fixed: Each Philips SpeechMike no longer appears twice in the "Controller Setup Wizard" pull-down list of detected controllers.
    • Fixed: "Load Audio CD Track(s)" dialog was always giving an "Opening audio file failed" error.
    • Fixed: "Load Audio CD Track(s)" dialog no longer attempts to rip data tracks.
    • Fixed: Ripping an audio track from a mixed-mode CD wasn't working.
    • Fixed: List columns in the "Load Dictation File(s)" dialog can now be sorted.
    • Fixed: No longer prevent switching to full view if the last dictation is deleted while in Scribe Mini view.
    • Fixed: Options -> Hot-Keys -> "Set defaults..." button wasn't working.
    • Changed: Dictation list now uses different icons for audio and video.

  10. I really need to be able to open Express Scribe with a file already selected and ready to play.

I found the -selectfile "[OriginalFilePath]" option, but it doesn't seem to do much

The file has to be loaded before calling -selectfile.

and the API documentation seems to be wrong.

Yes, the description for -selectfile is wrong.

  11. A box pops up with the statement "Unable to load .dct file because file version not supported. Please download latest version of software."

Are all your DCT files coming from the same dictator?

What software package(s) is / are being used to create the files?

Do you have a sample file that you can't load that you'd be willing to upload to NCH for testing?

  12. When I open the e-mail I click on the little attachment symbol. Some files have a .wav but I've had some jpg and other files come through.

It sounds like you have Windows configured to associate Express Scribe with those file extensions.

See the release notes for Express Scribe v4.35 for links to instructions on how to change file associations.

Scribe should only be associated with audio formats, and video formats if you have v5.00 or later. It shouldn't be associated with image formats like JPG.

  13. Just where is this "Open or create word-processor document" icon?

Sixth icon from the left on the small tool-bar.

nor is "Speech Recognition" mentioned anywhere in the Contents.

It's listed in the help contents as "Options ~ Speech to Text".

If your alternate solution is to purchase the Dragon software, what's the point of using WavePad?

    WavePad?

Even if you choose to use a speech-to-text engine to generate a first draft, Express Scribe is still useful for proof-reading and corrections, and it's work-flow features.

  14. But then what to do, so that mp3 file gets converted into word file...?

To do it manually: Load the audio file then click the "Open or create word-processor document" icon and start typing.

    OR

To do it semi-automatically: Install a speech-to-text engine (eg. Dragon NaturallySpeaking), enable and configure speech recognition in Options -> "Speech to Text", load the audio file, wait for the conversion to finish, then copy and paste the resulting text from the Notes window into your word-processor document (and correct all the mistakes).
