  1. Everytime i click on the setup wizard, it attempts to dowload a file called Piehid, and then after a minute or 2 an internet browser opens and gives me this hereunder message:

Trend Micro InterScan for CSC SSM

The following security-risk is detected in HTTP traffic:

    Item: www.nch.com.au/components/piehid.exe

    Action: deleted

    Security risk: Virus PAK_Generic.001 found.

The InterScan for CSC SSM has scanned the file you are attempting to transfer, and has detected a security risk - the file will not be transferred.

ClamWin doesn't detect a virus in that file. Could be a false positive.

Trend Micro's website about PAK_GENERIC.001 says:

if you have reason to believe that the detected file is non-malicious, you can submit a sample for analysis
  2. we commonly use F3 key to manage automatic insertion in Microsoft Word. Problem is that, as Express Scribe is using F3 as a control key for "fast reading", this is taking precedence, ending with a fast reading of the audio file (not expected) and not by an automatic insertion in Word (expected).

You can remove or remap the Express Scribe system-wide hot-key assignments under Options -> Control.

  3. What I would like to be able to do is have the person using Express Scribe go in and view all the files on the FTP host and then select one to download (based on office location, priority marking, or other factors) while leaving the rest of the files on the host for the next typist.

Express Scribe alone can't do those things. Have you looked at Express Delegate? It has a rule builder for deciding which dictations are assigned to which typist(s) or typing pool(s).

  4. I received a file in .rar format but when I tried to open it with Express Scirbe it said that .rar format was not supported by Express Scirbe.

RAR is an archive format. You need to decompress the audio file inside with a program like 7-Zip before you can open it with Scribe.

  5. I did as you suggested and resized the main window. When I relaunched the program, it did keep the new size, so I'm guessing that's not the issue.

This might sound a bit odd, but does the main window have an X position of 0? ie. Is it flush against the left side of your screen? If so, could you move it to the right a bit and try again?

  6. Now EVERY TIME I open the Express Scribe program, the Welcome dictation file pops into the player and starts playing.

Resize the main window, close the application, then relaunch it. Did the main window keep the new size, or has it reverted to the default size? If it reverted to the default size then Scribe probably doesn't have permission to write to the registry. If Scribe can't write to the registry then you will see strange behaviour, like the welcome message repeating.

  7. When I went to configure the pedal all it asked was for me to press on the Play part of the pedal - it would not then go to Forward or Rewind and those options are currently not working on the pedal - how can I include these two features in the configuration?

This could mean either that Scribe has not detected your press on the Play pedal, or that the "Number of pedals" pull-down list is set incorrectly. Choose "GamePort1 or USB1" or "VEC Infinity USB pedals", depending on which foot pedals you bought, and 3 pedals, then try the "Foot pedal control setup wizard" again.

  8. The file was sent to me by email as an attachment from my client's phone. I can then open the attachment and play it but am unable to either save it or load it onto Express Scribe as I do with other attachments.

You could change Windows' file associations to always associate Scribe with the relevant file extension, instead of QuickTime player. Alternatively, instead of opening the attachment directly from your email client, try right-clicking on the attachment, saving it to your hard disk, opening Scribe and using File -> "Load Dictation File(s)" to browse to it and load it.

  9. One of my clients also wants to send dictation from his mobile phone which uses Quicktime. At present I am unable to find a way to transcribe this via the foot pedal.

Where are you stuck? Have you found a way to transfer a file from the phone to Express Scribe?

  10. I have installed: Express Delegate 4.03 on a WinXP computer (as server).

I have installed: Express Scribe 4.05 on an OS X computer (as client).

You need v4.27 or greater of Express Scribe to connect to an Express Delegate server.

I've setup user accounts and a typing pool using the web interface.

    Now I'm stuck.

How do I "point" the client towards the server (I know that I will need Server Name, User Name, Password and Directory what I don't know is where to find this information on the server.

Once you upgrade Express Scribe, you'll be able to choose "Express Delegate" as the "Receive Method", rather than FTP.

If the server and client are on the same LAN, the server address will just be the server's computer name. (In XP, right click on "My Computer", select Properties, and look on the "Computer Name" tab.)

If you're connecting via the internet then you'll need a static IP address for the server, with a DNS service if you want to use a domain name instead of remembering that IP.

Also, what issues do I need to be aware of with my router? Will I need to open ports / setup DMZ etc?

Yes, assuming your client is accessing the server via the internet, then you will need to open and forward ports.

Assuming we get the above point sorted, my second question is that: if my WinXP computer is acting in the role of server then surely it would have to remain on all the time for typists to download dictations and upload transcripts?

    Correct.

If this is the case, as it is a laptop this is not ideal.

    What are my alternatives?

In an ideal world we'd pass this role onto an online provider.

If we do this then do we have to set-up a virtual WinXP, 2000 computer with an online provider to accomodate this?

We then of course come into the next issue of cost. Online providers of this sort of service aren't cheap.

Does NCH have a service whereby you act as server for us where we can upload dictations / download transcripts securely?

If you're not set up to run your own server but you still want access to your dictations remotely then the simplest solution would probably be to find an FTP host. You can then remove Express Delegate from the equation altogether and configure Express Dictate and Express Scribe to access the FTP site directly. Although you would of course miss out on the more advanced work-flow management features of Express Delegate.

  11. I upgraded to newest Express Scribe and now the files will not load automatically from one of the servers. the settings did not change and when i do the test settings, everything is green and it sees the files, however, they will not download automatically.

If you've configured Express Scribe on several machines to use the same FTP folder as an incoming source then one of the other machines may already have downloaded the files.

If you do need to distribute the work between several typists, Express Delegate may be a better solution.

  12. What exactly goes in the SMTP mail host box? should it be "mail.gmail.com:emailname:password"?

You shouldn't need the user name / password here.

Is the default email just the full email address?

    Yes.

  13. It would be nice if there was a parameter that could be set such that the page refreshes at a particular interval.

That's a great suggestion, although I'd recommend you use the "Send Improvement Suggestion or Feedback" link in the program's Help menu to make suggestions.

  14. Changes in Express Scribe v 4.35 for Windows:

  15. We send files to onlinefilefolder and they must be .wav files. how do i save the dictations in this format.

Do you mean www.onlinefilefolder.com? They provide FTP acces, don't they? If so, then in Express Dictate, go to Options -> Sending -> New Recipient. On the Recipient tab, select FTP as the send method and fill in the FTP login details. You can change the file format to WAV on the File tab.

  16. got in installed for all of us - worked half ok to begin with, but now the files won't load properly, files got cut off etc. And now it's sort of shut down completely;-)

Can't even get the files (mp3 and wav mainly) to load.

Are these problems happening on all the machines, or only one?

    Are they long dictations?

How much free disk space do you have?

What do you mean "shut down completely"?

  17. It's only one. I have set it to manager. She uses internet explorer 7. She can get to the login page but it tells her log-in failure. She is using the information that I put in (email address and password).

The fact that other users can log in indicates that it's not a problem with the server. And the fact that this user can load the login page indicates that it's not a problem with her browser / network / firewall. I'd say it's just a simple case of checking the user name and password for obvious things like mismatched capitalisations, or white-space where it's not expected.

  18. I have been into Options, incoming, then add, but here is where I get stuck. The server address required - is this my server or the senders server. Then the logon fields, is this my email address and password.

Have you selected the correct "Receive Method" on the left-hand side? The default is Express Delegate, but you may need to change to FTP.

The doctor or the relevant system administrator should have provided you with the address, user name and password for the server.

  19. Changes in MSRS v 4.10 for Windows:

    • Fixed: Long registration names and / or location details no longer cause corruption in output XML files.
    • Fixed: No longer get "Audio meta-data detected" error when uploading to an Express Delegate server.
    • Fixed: Tags and notes were being lost when uploading to an Express Delegate server.
    • Fixed: Less degradation of audio quality when uploading to an Express Delegate server. (Requires Express Delegate v4.02 or later for best results.)
    • Fixed: "Custom command-line" send method wasn't removing recordings from the send queue after they were successfully sent.
