  1. I am testing it out and seem to be having trouble receiving the file into my Scribe section so that I can just press the play button and start. Its telling me I have to sign up for automatic downloading and when I try to do that it does not let me. I have tried the manual way and I do see the file in my documents but I keep getting a pop up saying that the space on my recording hard drive is very low and I need to make space. Please excuse my ignorance but where do I find the recording hard drive in order to delete some files to make space. This is a first for me but I really want this to work out. Also, could that pop up warning be the reason it is NOT loading in?

I went and deleted some stuff I did not need and now it says I have 275MB only. How much MB does a little test dictation take? Its a 2 second recording.

Express Scribe is testing your free disk space against the value in the "Warn me when my hard drive space is below (MB)" setting, not the size of your dictation. In v4.23 you can find that setting on the Disk Usage tab of the Settings dialog.

  2. Thing is, I sent one job that went through just fine but the second one "disappeared." I looked for the second one and, on a hunch, found it in Microsoft Outlook outbox which I don't even use (I use Outlook Xpress). I don't why or how it got diverted to Outlook.

Express Scribe should use your system's default email client.

I did get an automatic message saying that to free up disk space, the computer god could COMPACT (the word it used) something and I said yes, and my emails got compacted but I thought I had plenty of disk space. Do emails have their own disk space separate from the whole computer anyway?

  3. My channels come up, but I have no control over them. Neither sliding the bar nor highlighting the channel numbers has any effect what-so-ever.

The channel volume and mute controls do actually work, but not in real-time. You have to press Play again for them to take effect. It's a bug in v4.23.

  4. It seems like Slow can be no lower than 25, and Fast can be no lower than 100...

Is there a reason for the limit? Using settings outside those bounds seem to work within a session...

It wouldn't be fast if it was less than 100%, so that makes sense. Not allowing speeds below 25% might be a sound quality issue.

  5. "All" the settings? Isn't there only one, MAPI or SMTP? Since it was working before, I left it where it was, although I did try going from MAPI to SMTP. What should the settings be? I use Outlook Express. Thank you so much.

In the Email Settings dialog you should see three send methods (MAPI, SMTP and "Send directly"), several SMTP settings (server, user-name, etc.), and the Default Reply Email. I don't know of any problems with MAPI and Outlook Express, although you probably do need to fill in the reply address.

Also, configure any virus scanning software you have installed so that it doesn't add text to outgoing messages. I've seen a couple of virus scanners that corrupt outgoing mails that have attachments.

Just as a simple test, try sending a mail with a Word attachment to the same recipient normally, using Outlook Express. ie. Take Express Scribe out of the equation. You may find that the recipient's mail server is rejecting your mail just because it has the attachment.

  6. I downloaded v4.23 when I got an XP computer and am now having a problem dispatching my Word docs: They are not sending. The last thing I tick on is "dispatch," and then the dictation disappears to "Done," the screen clears out, but the recipient gets nothing. I have XP. Before, I had 2000 and an older ES version which worked great together. Thank you for helping me get back to work.

Have you clicked on "Email Settings" in the Dispatch dialog and double-checked all the settings there?

  7. The function that isn't working is the skip back function that when you hit the middle foot pedal, it goes back a few words and then resumes. I cannot find that function in the drop down menu. There's only play and rewind, which is different.

The "Auto backstep on stop" setting in the Playback tab of the Options dialog should behave the same for both keyboard and pedals.

And the problem doesn't happen every time either. It's sporadic. I'm thinking it's the foot pedal, but I can't see anything obvious wrong with it on the inside.

Unless you have access to a spare foot-pedal for testing (even a USB joystick would probably suffice), trying the keyboard short-cuts and experimenting with different dictation files seem like the easiest experiments to narrow down where the problem is.

  8. I have those shortcuts disabled or else they'd interfere with my typing. The only ones I use are F10, F11 and F12.

The normal Play, Rewind, etc. keyboard shortcuts should work if Express Scribe is the active window, regardless of whether you have global hot-keys enabled or not.

We just need to determine if you can reproduce the playback problems using anything other than pedals.

  9. Lately, when I use the foot pedal, many times, there is a long time lag before it begins playing. Meanwhile the sound will bounce in and out for maybe 30 seconds before it plays. I cleaned the foot pedal out, but that didn't solve the problem. Do I need a foot pedal or new software or both? Will any foot pedal do or must it be Scribe's.

Do you get the same sound "bouncing" problem if you use a keyboard shortcut instead of a pedal?

  10. I am using Express Scribe version 4.23 on Vista 32bit along with Microsoft Word 2007. When I attempt to use the hotkeys from within Word, Express Scribe steals focus, whether its minimized or not. Is there a way to correct this behavior?

Unfortunately it's a bug, not a configurable setting.

  11. When I change settings for fastspeed and slowspeed in the Express Scribe Settings/Playback window, Express Scribe does not "remember" them for future use.

When I change the settings for fastspeed and slowspeed in the Windows Registry, Express Scribe ignores them and loads "defaults".

Do you mean the "Variable Speed Slow (%)" and "Variable Speed Fast (%)" settings?

Are the settings you tried to save below 25% or greater that 225%? The Options dialog doesn't mention it, but Express Scribe will limit the values to this range.

  12. I am using Express Scribe on Windows 2000 Professional and having problem that when I load mp3 files it loads but shows zero duration although I can play this file on windows media player....I have tried using all versions of Express Scribe but non of them worked ....I have also tried different component installations but did not work....

Does the file load in WavePad? If so, try re-saving it and loading the new file into Express Scribe.

  13. 1) The NCH website page regarding Express Scribe running under Linux offers a download for native Linux version of Express Scribe but states, "This is a compiled binary program made for Linux. The advantage is it does not require Wine. The disadvantage is some esoteric proprietary formats cannot be supported."

Regarding proprietary formats, the question is, does the Linux version support (non Olympus) .dss voice files?

The DSS format is only supported in the Windows version of Express Scribe, and even then it's not 100% reliable.

    3) Are there any specific (and important) features within the Windows version of Express Scribe that are not available in the Linux version. You know, the little things like not being able to load files, set encryption keys, browse for folders in the Load screen?

Wider file format support and speech-to-text conversion would be two of the bigger things missing from the Linux build, just off the top of my head.

Also, keep in mind that the Linux version is probably a port of an older version of Express Scribe. You can check http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/versions.html for Windows release notes. I'm not sure if there's similar information for the Linux version.

  14. Ok i know it sounds odd but its true. Im running Express Dictate Version 4.02 and i have this installed on 7 PCs all registered before you ask. I have 2 of these PCs which are used for typing and only one is used at anyone time. Now for the problem when the user of PC A sends a dictation it goes to the correct folder and has the correct name and details but has the dictation from PC B from months ago. any idears i have cleared down the old dictations from the shared file which everyone sends to and also cleared down both the local folders.

    v4.02? Did you mean v5.02?

What is your "Data Folder" option set to? (For v5.02 it's in the User tab of the Settings dialog.)

Do you know if you're using Windows roaming profiles by any chance?

  15. I have gone onto the Settings, Control, and Hot Keys and tried the Remove button, but this does absolutely nothing.

When you say it does "nothing", does that mean the hot-keys are still visible in the list? Do they reappear in the list next time you open Scribe?

There was a bug in older Scribe installers on Windows Vista that would add the default hot-keys in such a way that you could only delete them if you ran the application as administrator. (Right click on the Express Scribe shortcut and select "Run as administrator"). Might be worth a try.

NB: NCH doesn't recommend using "Run as administrator" for normal usage, so make sure you quit Scribe straight away and run it again normally after you try this work-around.
