    Editing files

The only splits I can do with my version (5.10) are 'at cursor', 'at silences' and 'at bookmarks' under the Edit menu. didn't know the 'split file into its component channels' feature was included in later versions.(?)

I don't think you can split stereo tracks into separate channels with WavePad. (wish I was wrong about that. easy to do with a non-nch, free program called Audacity)

    Editing files

I find it crucial to zoom in as much as necessary to ensure that the cursor is where I want it. Drag the cursor to where you want to end the edit. The section you have selected will be highlighted. Now use the I< and >I transport buttons to jump between start and end of selection to make sure you have them exactly where you want. To move the start or end points, hover the cursor over the start or end until the cursor turns to a double-headed arrow, and drag to reposition. I follow this procedure for most editing such as fades. To remove the selection I use the Delete button. I have noticed the same issue as (I believe) you are reporting; it isn't always accurate - hence I always zoom in and toggle to start and end of selection as I've described. If you are just trying to trim the start, place the cursor where you want. Select the Edit menu, choose "Trim Start' from the Trim dropdown which will delete everything before the cursor.
  4. I have struggled with this very thing in the past when using mixpad. Although it should be pretty simple, I felt kinda dumb not being able to figure it out. The help files didn't help. I really hope someone can answer your post. I ended up doing amplification and other editing in WavePad first. Eventually I gave up and got Audacity (sorry NCH) - a free, easy and extremely useful program. I still use WavePad daily and like it very much.
  5. MIchael, I also have been using Express Burn for many years, and would like to help, but it isn't clear what your issue is. What type of project is it ? (audio, data, video) I have experimented a bit to try and replicate what you are reporting to no avail. (my versions is 4.53, windows) Saving a project, whether it be music tracks, data folders, etc. will simply create a shortcut file that you can load into the program in the future, either by dragging the icon or choosing 'Load File' from the File menu. (I'd imagine all sources would still need to be in their original location for the program to find them) I can't understand why the folder couldn't be removed, but try shutting down Express Burn and opening the program again. Please report back if you want to continue a dialog. Good luck, - Dan. (There shouldn't be a need to reinstall the program.)
  6. Could you describe/explain the compressed wave format? Not sure if this will help but the simplest way is to open Switch and drag the file onto the window. (Or you can use 'Add File(s)' to browse for the file.) Use the 'Output Format' drop-down to choose the format you prefer, and use the 'Encoder Options...' button to choose the Format/Attributes you prefer. If you are going to burn a cd, for example, you would want to choose PCM Uncompressed (windows) and 44100 Hz, 16 Bits, Stereo. When converting to MP3 I believe the best option is Constant Bit Rate @320 kbps, although that may depend on your use and/or file size preference. It should be noted that if the wave is a lossy compression (as opposed to a non-lossy compression format like .flac) you will not be able to replace any 'missing' quality by converting to higher quality format/attributes.
  7. WavePad is an editing program. While you can record a file, it isn't meant for multi-track work. The NCH program for that is MixPad.
  8. You can use SoundTap to record the audio in real time while streaming/playing the video.
  9. a 'clunky' suggestion (from this thread: http://nch.invisionz...wo-mono-tracks/ "Hi, Wave pad can do it but it is a little clunky. turn the volume on right to zero, save as mono then set volume on left to zero, save as mono." Someone in that thread also mentioned using Edit>Split>Split File Into Its Component Channels... my version (5.10) doesn't show that option. While I still use WavePad all the time, Audacity excels at many functions, such as splitting stereo tracks.
  10. SoundTap will label each file as follows : yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss (year-month-day-hour-minute-second) This denotes the date/time the recording was started. So they will be in sequence. Should you choose to rename the tracks, do so in a manner that will keep the sequence identity intact. It is very helpful to create/choose a folder for saving projects as you start up SoundTap.
  11. I haven't used SoundTap much lately, but I do remember when I was using an older version quite a bit (back @ six years ago on an xp system) opting to start a new recording after a pre-set silence was simple and worked well. As I look at it now (I have version 2.11) I can't see any way to do this. So I can't offer much help, but if you are watching/listening while recording a stream, you can manually stop and start recording to separate files. Anyway, I open the files in WavePad to edit; there you can split and trim (and much more) although it is a bit of labor probably not to everyone's liking I'm sure...
  12. Don't know if this will help, but received this info in an NCH email yesterday: Audio Tip: Remove Background Noise If you record meetings, lectures, interviews, or even yourself practicing the guitar, you might end up with some unwanted background noise. Clean up those recordings using WavePad audio editor. From the Effects tab, click the Cleanup button and select Noise Reduction, Audio Spectral Subtraction. Click the preset drop-menu and select voice or music, then click OK to apply. From the Effects tab, again click the Cleanup button and select Noise Reduction, Multi-band noise gating. Select a preset, then click OK to apply. If using the presets don't give you the best results, try using lower levels on each type of reduction.
  13. Yes, when using Express Rip to copy a cd to your computer you can select the output format (and output folder) - and that may well be all you need. Switch, on the other hand, can be used to convert audio files that are already stored on your drive(s) to other formats. Here are some examples of how I use Switch. I do a lot of field recording of local music, and always record the files as .wav files (16/44100.) Many bands have a Live Music collection on archive.org. The Live Music Archive requires files to be uploaded in .flac format, so I use Switch to convert my .wav files to .flac for this purpose. Sometimes I want to share the tracks with the band (maybe to check setlist or whatnot) via dropbox, and I will use Switch to convert my .wav files to .mp3 format to create and offer smaller file sizes that are quicker to download. There are many uses/applications for Switch. Hope this helps - sorry for being a smart aleck. - Dan
  14. Is this a trick question? Switch is a utility for converting audio files from one format to another. ExpressRip is for ripping (copying) audio files from a cd to a computer drive.
  15. http://www.nch.com.au/switch/kb/1405.html Quoted from file-extension.org: The XKR file extension is associated with the Sing Magic a karaoke on-line service, karaoke song format and karaoke song player for Microsoft Windows. The *.xkr file stores karaoke song playable in the Sing Magic karaoke player. This file type is not meant to be opened directly, there is no software that could open and work with it directly, or there is no information available in public sources about opening this file type. This is usually the case of some internal data files, caches, temporary files etc. As far as we know, this .xkr file type can't be converted to any other file format. This is usually the case of system, configuration, temporary, or data files containing data exclusive to only one software and used for its own purposes. Also some proprietary or closed file formats cannot be converted to more common file types in order to protect the intellectual property of the developer, which is for example the case of some DRM-protected multimedia files.
  16. Sorry in advance if you've already got this figured out, but try to raise the volume on the source. For example, an internet page that streams audio will usually have a volume/mute control (usually represented as a speaker icon.) Also check your system volume. While recording with SoundTap it is good to get the meter readings showing in the yellow to orange area; the program doesn't offer much in accurate display, nor can you make any adjustments to recording volume. If you want to amplify your files, WavePad is a great program.
  17. It would seem that you mean to post in the VideoPad forum?
  18. If I follow what you are wishing to do, WavePad would work fine for this. Open the first song in WavePad and then paste the second song at the end. Select the part you want to change the volume of, and then use the Amplify tool (under 'Effects'.) Set Gain at under 100% to reduce volume.
  19. If you have the patience and determination, you can use SoundTap to record the audio (in real time.) I once did this to make an audio cd of the musical selections from a dvd of a school production. I don't know, but there may well be copyright concerns in your case.
  20. Hi. I'm not sure what a .cda is, but it doesn't show as an option in my version 4.22 (windows 7) either. But if you are wanting to convert mp3s to burn to a cd-r, then I would choose output format: .wav, Encoder Options: 44100Hz, 16 Bits, Stereo. Of course, ExpressBurn will automatically convert mp3 files when added to an Audio CD list. http://www.nch.com.au/switch/kb/1405.html
  21. The point of this software is not to circumvent copy protection, but rather offer an easy to use program for converting audio files types. It has served me well performing the varied tasks I require of it; I however have little experience with .wma files.
  22. As a registered user I have no idea what features may not be available with the free edition, but I believe that bookmarks are what you want to use.
  23. Not sure; never recorded anything longer than a 45 minute cassette side, but... I'll bet you could paste it together in WavePad.
