Password protected DSS

You need to get the password from your DSS file sender. Express Dictate, Pocket Dictate, DialDictate and WebDictate can encrypt the recordings prior to transmission to protect security and privacy. If this has been done, you must enter the same key in Express Scribe to decrypt the audio.

The key is based on the user id of the sender (obtained when you register Express Dictate or DialDictate). If you have not yet registered, use the id 0.

When I try to load the encrypted password protected file into Express Scribe it simply won't load. Therefore, I'm assuming Express Scribe is unable to accept password protected files. If that's not the case, what steps do I need to follow in order to get to the point where I can open it/enter the password to open it.

In this case, you need to set the encryption key on Express Scribe directly.  To do that you may open Express Scribe, click on Options > Incoming > Set user's decryption key, then you need to set a user ID, and enter the Key they sent you to decrypt the file.

Once you have set the decryption key, you can try loading the encrypted key, and test it.

In case the issue remains, you may want to contact NCH Software support for further support.

Can you explain a bit further - I've never had to do this before. When I tried to set a user ID (number) and then input the password (key) nothing happened. Can you explain the step-by-step to allow me to understand how to set this up? Note: The person who will be sending me the files (one single person) will be assigning a different password to each file they send.

Separately, I've tried contacting NCH several times with a couple of different queries via email but they never respond anymore, compared to previously where they would actually reply to emails. Not sure what has happened there. I am using the Pro version of ES, so this is a bit disappointing. I'm out on a limb here! Thanks again, and hoping you can help, or someone can on here??

Are you able to provide a step-by-step as I've tried this but I'm not having much luck, and need to be able to do this asap. Note: there is one sender who sends password protected files but each file has a different password.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to open a password-protected DSS (Digital Speech Standard) file in Express Scribe. This is because password protection is a security measure implemented by the manufacturer of the digital voice recorder to protect the confidentiality of the data contained in the file. This is the normal practice of all sites. They order a GDPR service from firms like privasee to improve or completely data protection of both your site and your users' data.
