WAV vs MP3

Hi, newcomer to Videopad but had experience with other programs, mainly Premiere. I started back in the late 90s when non linear was just about affordable and large Hard drives were 4GB !!!! if you had 2 or 3 you were god !

Anyway its been a while since using an edit system and I chose Videopad as it looked familiar although there are a few bit missing I would like to see back.

My first try with Videopad was ok  so I tried to edit my bands rehearsal , this consisted of 4 video tracks each on its own timeline and an audio track in WAV format on a spare audio timeline. It became impossible to edit as the preview screen wouldn't show video, just a static frozen frame. Anyway in the end I managed to put one song together at around 3 1/2 minutes with a few transitions and efx, nothing too fancy. I then messed around with settings and looked through this forum for answers but may have stumbled across it by trial and error. I removed the WAV audio and the video played while scrubbing through the time line and general editing . So I replaced the WAV file with another WAV file.....same thing happened, impossible to use. I removed WAV file again and all was good  once more. I then converted the Wav file to MP3, placed it on timeline and hey ho! its all good.....well so far anyway, lets just hope it stays that way.

The thing I am missing most is in Premiere there used to be a small window with the whole project in, so if you wanted to quickly go from one part of the project to lets say 75% up the time line , you would just click on the area and it would take you there. With Videopad the only way I have found so far is to manually scroll though unless I am missing something.

All in all its not too bad so far.

Regards.

The WAV/freeze behavior you describe can't be duped here.  Four video tracks and a WAV were programmed, and all was well?   First report of that behavior.

Let's see that project, with the WAV.  Please follow the PORTABLE project instructions here.  Upload the Portable Project folder (not the exported file) and share it publicly or privately.

http://nch.invisionzone.com/topic/23659-tips-for-getting-help-on-this-forum/

If it contains sensitive material link it in a personal message (PM).  Click the envelope above.  It won't be passed on or retained.  Use FILE|SAVE PORTABLE PROJECT AS, not simply SAVE PROJECT, and don't forget to get a shareable, public link - not one that is restricted.

While previewing the Sequence (not the clip) clicking on the timeline will jump to that point.  Click the double-headed arrow (bottom-right) and the entire project will be shown.  image.png

Install the latest.. For licensed users upgrades are free for up to six months from purchase date.  After that, VP will continue to fully function but a fee will be required in order to register the newest.  Retain your old install file and registration info.

I have deleted the files now and only have the one that works for me.

As for the part about jumping around the timeline project, its not what I require, sure its easy to to fit the entire project onto the screen but then if you want to change something at that point chosen  you probably will have to resize the screen again to be able to fine tune settings.

Just remembered another issue and that was it would be nice to be able to expand the view of the wave forms , it would make it so much easier to located a sync point. Yes you can zoom in put then wav form becomes blocky. I was used to being able to grab the audio time line and expand up or down to adjust just the view of the audio. I think there used to be an option too to turn off thumbnail clips of video, replacing them with colour and name of file. This I believe helped quicken things up...….Like I say its not a criticism, I will have to work with the way it works and yes I am a licenced user. Is the latest version stable? anyway of finding out what tweeks you have made from one version to another ? I am on 8.56 at the moment and I saw a recent post that  you advised against this version ??

You can also jump around the timeline by entering a new time in the Cursor Position window.  image.png

Unless zoom is extreme, don't see blockiness here.  Chevrons at the far left of audio track downward will provide a little vertical added space, but that's limited by the # of tracks.

There's also the small white line that divides the video from audio tracks.  Drag it upwards.  image.png

Here's the latest version, which overcomes an audio glitch in v8.56.  About the closest thing to release notes is here.

Yeah making the wave form visible larger works with one audio track but with 2 or more all it does is drag the audio timelines up and down the screen.

As for jumping around the track , it was just a comment on how I found that feature useful to the way I edit.

Thank you for all your time though 🙂

Hi Neale

If the white bars are dragged as high as possible (making the previews as small as possible {Too smallactually}) the maximum number of tracks you make visible at the largest width in the space available is 7 tracks.

3 Video tracks + 4 Audio Tracks  or  h4 Video Tracks and 3 Audio Tracks. In each case the hidden track can be accessed by scrolling at the right.

Above...4 Audio and 3 Video (scroll up the video tracks to see the 4th)

There is obviously a limited amount of space available for the tracks  to be displayed and scrolling them has to occur at some point. VP doesn't have an option to enlarge a particular track in situ but any track can be selected and displayed in the clip preview window in more detail.  More tracks can be made visible by clicking the down chevron at the left end which will make the tracks narrower
