Making a Screen of Mini Videos

Good morning; I have a question for the experts here :) We've been making videos for a few years and we are trying VideoPad right now. The software seems good enough and it's ideal for beginners. The latest 64 Bit version works okay for us, and it's a reasonable price too, though the taxes hurt a little when buying it in UK.

It's hard to convey the problems here but we want to make a grid of mini videos. A few seconds of six or twelve mini videos in a grid, for intros. Obviously this will be the split screen effect (grids), but it isn't quite working for us in VideoPad. Obviously the effect works but we are doing it all wrong, because we end up with big gaps when we actually want all the mini videos close together.

On a side note, we installed VP on a spare Optiplex 790, 16 GB RAM, Win 10 Pro, with an i7 2600 @ 3.40. Also an SSD. It works though it struggles at times. But it's worth adjusting Windows 10 settings and we've given priority tasking to Videopad. Disclaimer, people should know what they're doing before messing with settings - just thought that was important to remember. Moreover, we resize our images and videos down to manageable megabytes, which helps Videopad to cope. I'd think the same would apply to any video editing software.

Cheers and have a good Easter.

There should be no undesired gaps between panels with the split-screen effect.  Take a look at the suggestions and examples in the 'sticky' above...

Allow the green cache line above all video clip thumbnails to complete.  On multi-track projects, the blue ribbon below the preview window should change color.  This can take several minutes.  Each editing change may require a brief redraw of those lines.  After that, preview should be smooth.

As of today, suggest using this release.

If content is hi-res, consider commonly employed Proxy Editing...   https://nch.invisionzone.com/topic/26563-proxy-editing/?do=getLastComment

How lengthy is your project?   Be sure there's ample free space on the SSD for caching.  Sometimes it's helpful to break it into exported parts, for later final export.

Before starting a project, go to OPTIONS | DISK tab and Clear Unused Cache Files.  This can also be done anytime during editing.

Come back here if questions arise.

Hi Devon

Depending on the number of mini videos you have try (e.g you suggest 12) the method is basically to use split screen to set  a matrix of 4 x 3  This means you use 12 tracks each with  a specific clip set up vertically over the others. Each clip is then set to fill  their  allocated matrix area. They won't be 16:9  but quite close.  Each clip can be individually moved within their rectangle for adjustment of contents. There will be no borders between each of the 12 frames.

If things are very sluggish when the result played then use the same matrix but fill in just the the first vertical three clips. Export this as an mp4. Repeat with the next vertical row of clips and export in a similar way. Do the same for the remaining clips. When you have done all four vertical rows, load the four mp4s back. Place them one over the other on separate tracks. VP now only has to play 4 tracks instead of 12.
