As a non musician recording basic tracks with vocal and sountrack and maybe a harmony... I keep getting the same script on monitoring myself as I record and I don't understand it.. I expect I am not the only one.. I don't know what you mean by use existing hardware... my existing hardware is JUST a PC. If i get a simple mixer or USB interface will that work? I just want to be able to hear myself when I record. This really needs to be automatic in future upgrades.

You can only monitor what you record if you have configured the track you are recording on with  ASIO compatible hardware. So you need to install ASIO4All if you do not have that installed and make sure the recording device you are using is compatible with ASIO. Each track has a wrench icon in its controls, make sure to click on that and Under the recording options section make sure you have set the correct device with ASIO. You should then be able to monitor the track while recording.
