"Not enough material for an overlapping transition"

VideoPad Professional 7.11

Unable to add Crossfade transition between any clips. I get the "not enough material for an overlapping transition..." The clips have plenty of material. For example, two clips of 20 seconds each with a transition of 0.5 sec and I get the error.

There are no gaps between clips.

Put several clips that do this on your timeline, where you want crossfades between them.  Then follow these instructions...

Someone will take a look and come up with a fix.  The process is easy, quick and can be done privately.  Just follow these steps...

  •     Back up --- With your project on the timeline, click on MENU at the top-left.  Click FILE|BACK UP PROJECT FILES TO FOLDER.  Choose a folder and SELECT FOLDER.
  •     Upload ---  Upload the saved, numbered FOLDER.  Use a free server - Google Drive, MS OneDrive, etc.*  Do NOT upload the individual VPJ or export file.
  •     Get link --- Get a public link.  If using Google Drive click GET SHAREABLE LINK. Change "restricted" to "anyone with the link can view"  Click COPY LINK | DONE.
  •     Share ---    Paste that link here, or click the folder at the top-right of this forum to message it privately to me.  It won't be shared.

          *    Before uploading, right-click the folder, click PROPERTIES.  Look at the File Size to confirm that it's not too big for the free space on the server.

Seems fine.  "Not enough material for overlapping transition" is a message never seen here.

Under OPTIONS | EDITING tab | Video Clip Transitioning it's likely set to ASK.

Clip length isn't the issue.  What makes the difference is whether there is sufficient excess at the end of the FROM clip and the head of the TO clip to cover the dissolve length.

If not, it will prompt.  Choose FREEZE and each clip will be frozen at halfway through the trans, which is usually fine for quick transitions.

Choose OVERLAY and the clips will be shifted to make room, which can throw off sync on independent audio tracks.

If possible, upgrade to the latest version.  For licensed users upgrades are free for up to six months from purchase date.  After that, VP will continue to fully function but a fee will be required in order to register the newest.  Retain your old install file and registration info.

I do have it set to "Ask" in Options but I don't understand why it's even asking.

I'm not following you...why wouldn't clip length be the issue? If I have Clip 1 of 20 seconds and Clip 2 of 20 seconds and a crossfade transition of 1 second, the transition should split the difference between the two clips, correct?  It should use the last .5 sec of Clip 1 and the beginning .5 sec of Clip 2.

My clips have enough yet I get the warning message.

Your confusion is understandable;  it's not an intuitive concept but one used on many editors.

The clip length isn't the issue.  It's how much content is available at the join - where the transition is to be.  To illustrate...

Place a number of your clips on the timeline, then at a cut point between two of them delete a few seconds from the end of the FROM clip and from the start of the TO CLIP.

Now program a transition.  No prompt...because there is now enough excess content (the segments trimmed out of the original clips) to cover the transition duration.

The source clip, up in the bin, is not affected and still contains the full clip.

I also get the "Not enough material for overlapping transition" message every time I try to add a crossfade transition, and if you don't mind me saying, I find the explanation above unclear.

I understand that the problem is "how much content is available at the join - where the transition is to be." But who or what determines the amount of content available at the join, if it is not dependent on the length of the clips? Do this mean that to avoid a prompt, all clips in the sequence need to be shorter than their original forms in the bin?

That might be one way to think of it.  Where video is involved, there must be enough excess (the part that was trimmed) to allow for the transition duration.

But the prompt can be avoided by specifying FREEZE as the default transition behavior under OPTIONS | EDITING tab.
