Check for update. Now I'm being asked to pay

Hi,

I was using 7.2 (I think). I clicked check for update. It recommended 8.56. Fine. I wanted a version that was more stable and could hopefully handle larger files better.

Installed, and now it tells me my license is no longer valid. WHAT?

Can I please be contacted on how to get a stable version 7? I don't know what to do now.

For licensed users upgrades are free for up to six months from purchase date.  After that, VP will continue to fully function but a fee will be required in order to register the newest.  Retain your old install file and registration info.

So, your license code should be valid for any release within six-months of purchase.  Of course, any version can be installed and tested - as a trial.  Certain features won't be available.  Old versions, with their dates of release, are available here.

When you mention instability, specifically what is the issue?  And what is the resolution of those "larger files?"  How long is the project?

Thanks. Not the greatest piece of software that tells you you need to upgrade, then expects money for it. I'd have thought some sort of warning would have been useful.

Instability wise, the version I was using was absolutely terrible with large files. By large, I mean around 2GB (approx 40 minutes) of 1080p 60fps. If I'm editing in the clip editor, I have to wait for it to re-render. Honestly, it's not really fit for purpose in this regard.

I saw some horrifying idea round scaling the file size down manually, using those files, then switching back later. That's not how software should work!

Significant improvements have been made in speed and handling since the 6.x/7.x versions.  And there will be more to come when a 64-bit program is released - date unknown.  There are several ways to handle large, high-res files.  Rarely are there problems with 1080 HD.  Editing with proxies, even on high-end systems,, or PCs with less than high-end hardware, is not uncommon. https://tinyurl.com/y4r2jyn4

 Share a project and someone will check it out.  Not the export, but the PORTABLE project.  Just follow the PORTABLE PROJECT instructions here.  The process is not difficult, talks only a few minutes and can be private.

I always knew that Videopad ran for six months before upgrades were chargeable, and during that time it ran okay. After using Videopad for a year and a few good productions, I thank the company for a relatively low-cost video editor, but it's time I moved on and frankly I have a lot of criticisms. 

Too much time lost waiting for the software to stop buffering blocking out every preview, and no option to reduce the playback resolution, an omission which destroys workflow/production. After a year and upgrading to V8.16, the software is still hanging/not responding, far too often. And when you want to stabilise a video, it takes far too long. These annoying bugs are still present after a year's use, and thirty (time-consuming) productions in the bag. Everything seems to take twice as long as it should.

Frankly the upgrade fee doesn't seem worth it, and all-in-all I could lose hours in a day trying to find workarounds and waiting for Videopad to behave. But as a low cost entry-level product, it's not bad for home videos.

As I said, thanks, and it's been an extremely useful entry-level video editor.

If the trial period has expired, AVI usually succeeds for export.  Certain effects and features may not be available in the non-licensed version.

What is the upgrade fees? I don't see them anywhere. I still have 6.xxx

I thought once purchased it was upgradeable but after seeing some of the comments, it appears upgrades cost, 'after 6 months of ordering' lol. Interesting.

The 'free' version is a trial that you can install and test at anytime.  It never expires, just like the licensed version, but there are feature and export limitations.  There have been substantial changes and improvements since the 6.x series that you might want to check out.
