I loved VideoPad, but... (distorted video)

Hello everyone,

This is my first post, I joined because I am having trouble with VideoPad, which I had come to love and enjoy for the better part of 3+ years, but I have been having serious problems which have made using VideoPad completely unusable for editing my videos for my content, website, and channels. Unfortunately, when I purchased VideoPad, it was through the Microsoft app store, which really screwed me because I could have paid a similar sum straight to NCH and had support for using VideoPad, and actually would have owned the software, not merely had access to the Microsoft app. What a rip off, I wish I had known that back when I paid for the app, cuz back then i wasn't aware that I was about to get screwed for paying Microsoft and not NCH.

Anyway, my problem is that any time I upload my videos to VideoPad I have this horrible "green/purple warped screen thing" which makes every project on VideoPad unusable. I recently bought a monthly subscription to Magix movie maker, which is usable, not exactly as user friendly and easygoing as VideoPad was, but its better than some of the others I looked at. I would much rather prefer to continue using VideoPad, hell, I'll even buy the software from NCH at this point, but not until I am able to get some insight as to why I'm getting this awful discoloration and warpedness. I am not going to purchase it if it's going to continue making video projects unusable. I couldn't get technical support through NCH even though I paid to use the app, thanks to stupid Microsoft. But I really enjoyed VideoPad, and I am reluctantly using other software because of this issue. I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Here is what it looks like, it started a few months back, and happens on nearly every video, it doesn't go away when I export, and it makes the video completely unusable. The video does not have the discoloration when I open the video file itself on Windows, it doesn't have that problem when I upload it to Magix movie maker, only when I upload to VideoPad

Support via this peer user forum is often the best route to solving issues.  And it's free.

What are your PC's specs:  GPU/CPU/RAM/free space on C:?

Assuming that you use Windows, what version of Videopad is installed?  Look at the bottom-left corner of the window or the start-up screen.

Confirm that the video driver and Direct-X are up to date...  https://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/kb/1772.html

Have you tested the most recent release.  Yes, it may be unlicensed, but most features will be available for a trial period.  And there's a free version, with limited features.  Retain your MS app installer and licensing info, if relevant.  If it's discovered that there's a product defect NCH will make it right.

If possible, please submit a project that does this - for testing.  It's not difficult and can be private.  Just follow these steps closely...

  •     Back up --- With your project on the timeline, click on MENU at the top-left.  Click FILE|BACK UP PROJECT FILES TO FOLDER.  Choose a folder and SELECT FOLDER.
  •     Upload ---  Use a free server - Google Drive, MS OneDrive, etc.* - to upload the saved, numbered FOLDER.    Do NOT upload the individual VPJ or export file.
  •     Get link --- Get a public link.  If using Google Drive click GET SHAREABLE LINK. If necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with the link can view"
  •     Share ---     Click COPY LINK | DONE.  Paste that link here, or click the folder at the top-right of this forum to message it privately to me.  It won't be shared.

          *    Before uploading, right-click the folder, click PROPERTIES.  Look at the File Size to confirm that it's not too big for the free space on the server.

Version 11.71, but this is also the case for those free versions, I tried them, it was also the case on some beta version the app was trying, in fact, that's what I remember when it first occurred, it was on some beta version, and remained with all the others, and is the case on this 11.71 version that I opened tonight, that picture I included was from tonight on 11.71

Good, that narrows it down.  Have you tested VP on another PC, if available?  Did you update the video driver and Direct-X?

Please list the PC specs.

Try this as well...

Close VP.  Then use Windows Explorer (the file manager) to delete all files in these folders.  When done, install this VP version.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\NCH Software\Components"   (or they may be in the Program Files path (no x86).

"C:\Users\<PC user name>\AppData\Roaming\NCH Software\Components"

Please submit a project, as instructed above, for analysis.

Right now I am using DirectX 12, I'm trying to figure out where my PC is at with AMD but not quite there yet. I use an ASUS desktop. I assume its all up to date however

"Close VP.  Then use Windows Explorer (the file manager) to delete all files in these folders" btw, what folders are you referring to?

I tried that option on options editing, closed and reopened, put video file back on VP and it is still doing it. I am not entirely familiar with what you mean by submit a test project but I will try doing it once i understand what that means specifically

Thanks for choosing None (CPU only) and restarting the program.  Be sure that the AMD video driver is up to date.

Just for kicks test install this release and see if it displays the problem.  When it prompts that 'there's a newer version available' choose "Maybe Later."

If still no joy, you might close the program and delete those files in the folders specified above.  Then reinstall VP.  This will ensure that no files are corrupted.

To submit a project just follow the instructions in my first reply, exactly as stated, step-by-step.  Then folks here can see what you see.

Ok sure, I can do what you suggested.

It might also be helpful to add that the way I went about recording my videos for VP projects might be a little different than what most people do. I did not record any of these videos using VideoPad but rather Logitech webcam software "Logi Capture" that goes with my Logitech webcam HD Pro Webcam c920, so these video files that I have added to new VP projects are not from any folders associated with VP but instead Logitech capture folders from my webcam.

I did however, try using the VP video recorder with my webcam but I had the same result as if I had dropped them in the project from the logitech captures folder.

There's no way we can tell if the Logi video files are good until you share the project.  Or at the very least upload and share some Logi files.

Share your project.  Someone will take a look and come up with a fix.  The process is easy, quick and can be done privately.  Just follow these steps...

Did you test the older version linked in my last post?  Did you delete the files in the two folders and reinstall?  Did you confirm that the video driver up to date?

My fault for not replying sooner! I got sidetracked with some other things and had not installed that older version yet that you asked me to.

I have just done so, and now I don't see that distortion anymore!  But to give some further insight on those logi video files, the Logi video files themselves opened on my Windows 10 movie player app and played on my desktop without the issues on the video, it also uploaded to Magix Movie editor without that distortion, it was only when I would drop it on Videopad on those later versions, I recall it being a beta version when it first started occurring, though I can't say what beta version it was.  But this older VP you asked to reinstall seems to have cleared it! 😎

That's good to know, and thanks for troubleshooting.  This hints at a conflict with your AMD graphics and later VP releases.

Just to confirm:  you did disable GPU by choosing None (CPU only) and restarting Videopad when testing the later release?

Please upload and share a few of those files for analysis so the issue can be resolved.

You can do this privately by clicking the envelope at the top-right of this forum and messaging me.

Upload the file/s to a free server, such as Google Drive or MS OneDrive, get a shared (public) link, copy the link and paste it here or to me in a Private Message via the mail envelope in the top-right corner of this forum.  When using Google Drive, if necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with link can view."

When I reinstalled that earlier version of VideoPad the issue seems to have totally gone away and I see no more of the distortion, and I had not gone into the Editing options to select "None (CPU only)" i did not do that since the distortion seemed to have disappeared without having to do anything other than reinstalling that older version you asked me to install. I meant to mention earlier, if I send a test project, i would imagine the issue will not appear on those project files unless I go back and reinstall the versions that were causing it, no? Since they are completely gone on this older VP version i now have installed on my computer, wouldn't the problem be totally resolved in the test projects if they are resolved completely on this old version of VP that i have reinstalled now? Im not seeing any distortion now

Many changes have been made since the older v8.45.

To determine whether the GPU is causing the issue with the most recent releases we need to see if the distortion persists when None (CPU only) is chosen under OPTIONS | EDITING.  (There's no such option in 8.45).

Kindly reinstall the latest and turn off GPU.  Report back whether that solves the distortion.  And please upload a few of your Logi captured files so they can be analyzed, to aid in solving the problem.  Thanks.

Yes, i had mentioned in one of the earlier posts, that on the newer versions, before I uninstalled them to install that version 8.45, I DID actually try the OPTIONS | EDITING and switched to None (CPU only) and the problem was still persisting. Then i uninstalled those versions completely, installed the v 8.45 or whatever old version you asked me to try, and when I opened it and dropped the video file that was causing me trouble on the later versions, I noticed the distortions were completely gone, so I did not do the OPTIONS | EDITING, None (CPU only) on that older version 8.45 because reinstalling that version fixed everything, but I DID try the OPTIONS | EDITING, None (CPU only) on the later versions before uninstalling them to try the 8.45 version, just to be clear. Does that clarify? Sorry if my responses have been confusing

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey!

Sorry I had forgot all about this, and just remembered you asked me to do a project test. So, in that case, should i uninstall that older version 8.45 and install the new version so that the problem of distortion is once again there, and then submit a project test? Or what would you like me to do?

No need to submit the project or install 11.x.  Simply upload a file or two that has the distortion in the later releases and someone here will see if it does the same for them.

Upload the file/s to a free server, such as Google Drive or MS OneDrive, get a shared (public) link, copy the link and paste it here or to me in a Private Message via the mail envelope in the top-right corner of this forum.  When using Google Drive, if necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with link can view."

hmmm, well now none of the video files that had distortion on 11.71 have any distortion on them in the version 11.74 that I have on my computer now from the app. Its gone, so whatever was done in the versions after 11.71 fixed it. I dont think you will have any distortion if I dont, but if you want me to still send one for you to run in 11.71, you can do that, but once you are done with it let me know so i can erase it from Google drive because my drive is almost completely full and those video files take up lots of space. Do you still want a test file in light of it being fixed in 11.74 or no?

If all is well now there's no need to upload the file.  And there's never a mandate to upgrade.  You can always test drive the latest to see what's new and how it performs  ... then reinstall an earlier, purchased release.

  • 1 year later...

Once again having this problem!

Man, I really love VideoPad when it works, but I am really getting tired of these bugs and endless problems, this program is on thin ice with me, the bad seems to be outweighing the good here. May need to start looking for a new video editing software or something cuz its really getting under my skin.

Specifics needed:  what, precisely, is the issue?  Submit a file or project as outlined above.

What version of Videopad is being used?

The current release is hereIf a license has expired after the six-month grace period, later versions can still be run as a trial.

However, if a project is built with a very recent release, it may not be compatible with some earlier versions.

It's wise to use a single release, or one close in time, to create and tweak a project.
