Cannot make calls

Since installing Windows Service Pack 2, I am unable to make calls. When I start Express Talk it takes ages attempting to register with the network, then I get the messages:

Register authorization failed

Error returned: 401 Unauthorized

Check username or password for the proxy server

Registered as sip:(my username)@sip.internode.on.net

 

When I make a call, I hear the dialling tone, but the phone at the other end does not ring. I get the message:

Unable to auto-detect public IP. Using private IP

Error call attempt timed-out

The server is not replying

Call has disconnected

Error returned: 401 Unauthorized

Check username or password for the proxy server

Registered as sip:(my username)@sip.internode.on.net

 

I have double (triple) checked by username and password with my ISP and they are definitely correct.

 

I subscribe to a VOIP service called Nodephone run by an Australian ISP called Internode (www.internode.on.net). It worked without difficulty until I installed Windows Service Pack 2. I am running Windows XP home, as well as Zone Alarm (free) and AVG anti virus (free). I also run Spyware Doctor, Adaware, Spybot S&D, Superantispyware and Windows antispyware, but I don't have them running in the background, as I find they interfere too regularly. I just run scans regularly.

 

I have uninstalled Windows firewall, but that makes no difference to my problem. I have also tried using another softphone (x-lite) but that is also unable to make calls. My ISP will not provide any support for softphones other than the basic settings, and I have changed the SIP listen port to 5060, as specified by my ISP.

 

I have taken my computer to my local computer shop, which uses a different ISP, and Express Talk registers with the network instantaneously and when I make a call, the called phone rings immediately.

 

I am able to use p2p VOIP services such as Skye without difficulty.

My modem/router is an iConnectAccess 624.

 

Any suggestions will be very greatfully received.

my current theory is that when your XP SP2 sends out a DNS SRV request to your router, the router is very slow to respond or is timing out on the response. I've seen this happen before, which is why I am thinking this. A diagnostic will verify this though.
