Audio wizard works fine, yet outbound sound is badly distorted

Can anyone help, I'm at a loss as to what to do next?

I have installed Espress Basic on a Dell machine DIM 4600 with SoundMAX integrated digital audio. The audio wizard etc tested the mic and all works fine.

Incoming and outbound calls are via a VOIP on a 4 - 12 Mbps connection.

The machine connects to calls via Axon on another machine.

I believe the settings are correct as incoming calls and outgoing calls are connected without any problem, ie the audio element can be clearly heard both ends, with the exception of the outgoing audio signal which is just a reduced to a static type noise when you talk into it.

The only thing I can think of is the audio codec? Any one have any ideas.
