DISC Space Status Bar Inaccurate

Is there a way to calibrate or set the disc space status bar at the bottom of the screen to the actual space of the disc? A few times when burning single layer DVDs(4.7GB), the meter still displays green, but after video processing comes back saying the project is too big to fit on a disc. I think some burning programs auto-detect the disc before showing the space status. Is there a way to auto-detect or manually adjust the bar to remote more accurately for different sized discs?
