  1. Sting, I just installed over the old version and so far things are working out OK, as I mentioned in another thread. On the other hand, if NCH recommends uninstalling the previous version first, that would be good to know.
  2. So far, so good. I have made five backup data DVDs, which seem fine when read on all computers in my household (though I have only done spot checks of file integrity -- at some point soon, I'll do a full recovery from one of the backup sets and the success of that operation will prove the pudding). In any case, 4.09 seems to be a lot more useful than 4.08 was. I'll post again with more news and views whenever it seems appropriate.
  3. Thanks for the notice, Sting. I'll check it out and see if the problems get solved on my end. Either way, I'll report back.
  4. Any news on how the new version is coming along? We are now entering at least the third week of waiting for a fix, and there are backups to be made! In the meantime, I wanted to share another facet of this problem that I just encountered late last week. I tried to burn files to a DVD ROM using ISO+Joliet. In this case, the burning procedure did not apparently complete successfully -- I had to abort after many minutes of seemingly endless "finishing." But oddly enough, the resulting disc COULD be seen as containing data on the machine that created it at and least one other. I transferred the files on that disc to a different machine, and they appeared to be completely intact. I then tried the same experiment again with several other file sets. In each case, I had to stop the "finishing" process by hand, and there was no automatic verification of the copied files. But in each case, the disc I got did seem to be a readable copy of the source material. To summarize, the two aspects of this problem seem to be as follows: 1. Disc burns, verifies, and is declared Successful by ExpressBurn, but then appears blank on the creating machine and any others into which it is inserted. There is evidence on the recording surface that material was indeed recorded there, but still the disc seems blank. 2. Disc burns to the point of "finishing," but the latter process seems to go on forever and must be stopped by hand, precluding automatic verification of contents, and preventing ExpressBurn from concluding that the disc creation was "successful." Still, the disc that is produced appears to have the expected content; moving the disc to a different machine and copying content to that HD seems to yield a successful transfer (copied files seem to contain all expected data). I hope this can be of help to the engineers in diagnosing the problem and squashing the related bugs as quickly and completely as possible. Please post announcement of the availability of the fixed version on this board. Thank you.
  5. The fix seems to be taking a while. In the meantime, the charge for the unusable software has appeared on my credit card statement. I've asked before but have seen no official response: is there an earlier version that we can download and use as a workaround to burn DVDs (and in my case, CDs as well) until the fixed version appears?
  6. Until the new version is out, is there a prior version we can install as a workaround, which works properly at least to burn CD-ROMs and DVD Roms that contain selected folders and files? The current buggy version is the only one I have, so given my recovery needs at the moment, I'm definitely up the creek without a paddle.
  7. I have the same problem with data DVDs and also even with one of the data CD-ROMs I burned with Express Burn Plus (the other seems fine). If you look at the surface of the discs in question, they definitely appear to have been recorded to a point appropriate for the amount of data I attempted to burn onto them. But when inserted in a DVD computer drive, despite the fact that Express Burn verified the contents after the respective burns and pronounced the discs "ready for use," they all show up as blank. I read on another thread in this forum that a new version was coming along "maybe later this week" to address this and other problems. What I want to know is, given that the "blank" discs actually seem to have something written on them, is there any way that the new version can "unlock" those discs so that they can be read? Or are these discs simply wasted, and must I burn the data again? I wasted a fair amount of time this week, attempting to recover data from a damaged HD, hoping to preserve what I could recover on DVD ROMs. Once I discovered that the "archives" were unreadable, I had to scramble to get an external HD to be able to proceed with the recovery. That was a heart-attack, I can tell you. When the new version is released, and assuming it fixes the problem (whether or not discs "blank-burned" before then can be salvaged), could the engineers please explain what the problem was and what they did to fix it? Thanks.
