Can't get software to start running

Can anybody tell me how to get the software to start running? I'm trying a number of text-to-speech software programs and I loaded this one a couple times to ensure something did not fail during the loading process. The program comes up and I can open files. I can bring in text that will sit there in the box, highlighted or not. But the software will not start no matter what read aloud button I press on the vertical menu, in the lower right-hand corner, or from the toolbar. The slider simply does not move and there is no sound. I politely asked technical support but they said I have to purchase the software first. Not quite sure why I would purchase something that I cannot get to run, just to learn how to get it to run especially when there are 10 different competitors programs on the market. But I sure do want to give this one a chance, but I sure won't pay for something that appears inherently flawed. Thanks kindly.
