Split Screen Effect deleting videos

I have version 12.0.

I'm trying to insert a split screen effect using a video and an image. I can get the video and the image into the tracks, but when I try to add the effect to the clips, both "grey out" in the track and the clip preview goes black. I've tried removing both clips and replacing them in the media bin. I'm on a tight deadline and I'm getting frustrated. This feature used to work!

You have created a split screen effect on the timeline by laying one image onto track one and the other directly above it onto track 2.

                                                                  What effect are you then attempting to add to the split image clip?
