How do I delete an incorrect check number? It prevents the automatic sequencing of the legitimate check numbers.

I inadvertently entered an incorrect number for a check number.  Though I edited it from the entry, that number appears every time i enter the check field.  I have to manually erase, and enter the correct check number.  It no longer automatically sequences it to the correct number .  Do I have to delete the actual transaction?  Is this permanent?
