B party phone call is unintelligible

I am using a recomended 2 port analogue telephony USB card and while the A party is crystal clear the B party is faint and garbled.....can anyone help?

I have made further testing and disabling auto gain solved the problem. However at max recording volume the B party is still fairly faint on playback with the A party being about 3 times as loud. Thoughts anyone as this is using all the right gear and still not right?
