Free download problem

After download onto my HP Pavilion notebook, my sound icon disappeared and when I tried to

open volume control I had the error message "no active mixer devices available".

The sound seems to work with other users on the notebook.

I have now uninstalled the two programs, however the problem is still present on my user settings.

Any suggestions.

OK, so I'm not the only one having this issue. I'm running Wavepad in XP on my brand new HP Pavillion dv9000 series laptop.

I'm still working through this issue, and while I think it may be systemic, opening Wavepad definitely triggers the problem, which is: it somehow removes my Conexant HD Audio device. The device is listed in Hardware profiles as working properly, but it is not listed in the list of default devices for sound playback (control panel>>sound and audio devices>>audio).

I have had mixed success by removing the device and reloading it and the drivers. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Funny thing is, I have used Wavepad on this laptop before with no probs, and have used it for several years on a much older computer, again, no problems at all. This is especially frustrating, and I am almost ready to throw this HP machine out the window and start over with a Mac.

I have a solution, let's see how long it works.

You have to make sure the "Windows Audio" service is running in the background at all times.

Click Start, Run, then enter services.msc

You'll be in the Services(local) menu screen. Scroll down to "Windows Audio" and click on it once. In the sidebar, click "Start the service. " This assumes you're having the same problem I am, and that this service is somehow being stopped by another program. Just to reiterate, this "service" is supposed to be running all the time, and if it shuts down for some reason, it will cause havoc with your audio.

You may still have to reload your drivers, as noted previously.

What if "Windows Audio" is not listed in the Services window?

Running Windows 2000.
