Wave pad opens AU file changes format when saving

Here is a summary of my situation.

 

Wavepad 3.03 opens my .au files

 

sample rate 8000 size bytes, encoding u-law, 1 channel

 

 

I perform edit/crops etc or JUST CLICK SAVE

and this is what it gets changed to ...

 

sample rate 8000 size shorts, encoding signed (2's complement), 1 channel

 

 

Which is completely unuseable in my environment which requires the uLaw encoding.

 

How can I overrid the 16 bit (2's complement) when saving my files?
