Portrait orientated video doesn't display right on iPhone

I edited a portrait orientated video (9:16), saved it as .mp4 file and transferred it to iPhone5.

Surprise: holding the iPhone upright, only an extremely small image was displayed.

Also tried additional cropping with the same result.

Strange: If I edit and rotate 90° (fool VP for landscape), then transfer to iPhone and slowly turn iPhone upside down I get the full screen display.

I suppose it's because placing portrait orientation on VP Timeline automatically generates landscape?

Is there another, more elegant workaround?
