Converting to one legged recordings.

Some of the recordings I make have two separate legs, particularly through a video camera with plugged in microphone. One leg of the recording sounds fine, the other has a lot of interference. Together they sound fine and in all stereo output there is no problem, however the mono version always seems to take the wrong leg and make the recording sound bad. I would love to be able to choose which leg of the recording is saved as the mono version. Is there any way to do this in Wavepad?

I would suggest to take one of the sound legs and edit in WavePad....use the amplify or soften feature, (hot tab on your left) and make it as loud or as soft as the other recording....then highlight the whole thing, and use the 'remove hiss and noise' feature, also on your left.

 

Remember, the more positive you go towards '0' the more you will make it silent...I would suggest going '-36 to -20'...going negative will allow the sound to come through and the hiss to disappear.

 

Remember to make which ever the dominant one so that you can set your standard to that one...If you have MixPad, you will be able to put both recordings down and have them play at the same time to determine if you set your levels correctly. You can also do it on WavePad, but I just like using MixPad to hear the finished corrections.

 

Make sure to make copies of the original file first while you experiment with the sound corrections...

 

THEN GO TO OPTIONS>GENERAL>USE DEFAULT SAMPLE RATE AND CHANNELS>SET DEFAULT(LARGE LONG BAR)>MONO>>>SAVE AS

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. You say at the beginning to take one of the sound legs to edit. How do I separate out the two legs, is there a way of selecting the strong leg to use that for editing?

My problem is that when the double legged recording is converted into mono, which several internet applications do, then it is always the weak leg that comes out.

I used to use Radioman and there is a way of doing it there simply by moving the balance 100 per cent to the top or bottom and then saving that file. The chosen leg would then be doubled up and the sound perfect. Is there an equivalent in Wavepad?

This I will have to hand over to someone else, however, this intrigues me so I will do my own research as I find your answer, in the mean time, if someone else has more knowledge in this area, I would hope they would answer. It usually takes me less than a week to understand the full extent of what is needed so, I would ask you to give me that time and I will return. I will return daily to see if anyone else has suggestions as well...

In sending my last reply, I had another dig around and seem to have found a solution which works. I went to the stereo pan and moved the line wholly to the top. For reasons I don't understand, that seemed to make a mono recording of both legs of the stereo output, which sounds fine, as opposed to the normal way of changing it to mono which always just picked up the worse leg.
