  1. Now F7 and F8 default to real FF/RW, instead of backstep/forwardstep. And the maximize feature is just a bug. However, despair not: Here's the fix! Go into Hot Keys Setup, choose F7 as the key and then there's a drop down menu that has "backstep 5s." Similarly with F8 for "step forward 5s." For some reason the back/fwd step settings do not maximize Scribe. Then I set up F7/F8 for back/fwd step, and Shift F7/F8 or something like that for FF/RW. What would be VERY nice, aside from posting the new version with its number on the webpage, would be to have a page saying what the new features/fixes there are. Almost everybody does it, and the client can decide then whether to download the new version, or wait.
  2. You can find v 4.05 on this website. www.download.com. If this link doesn't work, go to the site and search for "Express Scribe" (rather than ExpressScribe). The version downloads as a zip file, which is nice. You can keep it around and switch off between the new and old as you like. Best of luck--krn http://www.download.com/Express-Scribe/300...tml?tag=lst-0-1
  3. I found a zip file of ES v4.05 from October 2006 at www.download.com. Search for it under "Express Scribe" not ExpressScribe." The url is http://www.download.com/Express-Scribe/300...tml?tag=lst-0-1
  4. I strongly recommend loading a wav, or any file, to ES before converting it, because ES is going to convert it, too. The fewer copies, the less degradation. Also, if you go into Properties in WMA and unclick WMA as wav default player, then go into "settings>file types" and select ES as the wav default player, you can send the audio from the website direct to ES. I still recommend saving it on your hard drive however: right click the file on the website, using "save target as" but instead of closing the box once it's finished downloading, click "open" and it should also then load into ES. This does mean, however, whenever you want to use WMA or anything else to listen to wav files, you have to specify that, either from the player, or from a right click menu ("open with"). --krn
  5. BTW: I found that Sony has an updated plug-in for WMP. It hasn't seemed to help with the msv/dvf problems with ES 4.11, but I'm all for upgrades (as long as they're not betas). Here's the url to find it, which also includes the upgrades for Sony's digital recorder voice editor and/or voice player. http://www.sonydigital-link.com/DNA/downlo...D&f=PPI1210 If you have a lot of Sony files, you may do well to go ahead and purchase their transcribing software, which includes the editor/player. It can be used, in a pinch for transcribing, but mostly it's the best way to convert their files to mp3 or wav, which can be used in ol' Scribe. --krn
  6. All your client reports, including my experience with the test file I sent you do comport with coxvos' experience. That was a 20 minute file, less than 1 MB, which took over an hour to load in ES, but no noticeable slowdown loading to Switch or Wavepad. (OS is XP, not Vista.) That was 6 weeks ago, and the release itself was Feb. Mercifully, later today I found an earlier version (4.05) on www.download.com, and it slipped the msv/dvf files in--the same test file I sent you--like a hand in a glove. Then even later, I decided to try the new version again, only to find I had downloaded the new, new v4.11. Sad to say, however, the 20-minute, < 1 mb test file started loading over an hour ago, and hasnt' finished yet. In the meantime, it is using 100% of my memory. "Mission not accomplished."--krn
  7. You were smart enough to save the previous version. Sigh. I'm using Switch Plus to convert Sony files... which was the proof that the problem lay in ES, not Sony's plug-in... but it's nowhere satisfactory for more than short term. Thanks, and good luck.
  8. Not to worry: If you have Sony's Memory Stick Voice Editor--which you need if you're docking from the voice stick, you can reliably convert it to mp3 or wav and load to Escribe. If you don't, download NCH's Switch Plus trial, and convert to mp3 or wav (better use wav), and load to Escribe. I've already used both and prefer Sony's program, but Switch will do in a pinch. NCH says it has completed the new version, but it takes two weeks to get it on the website! That was supposed to be yesterday, if you've been following this threat. Good luck, KRN
  9. You should be able to just put the cursor on the blue bar at the top and drag ES (or any other window) to where you want it. Put the curson on the top bar, and hold down the left mouse button, and drag.
  10. You may have downloaded ExpressDictate or some similar product that works with Escribe along with it, as a trial. EScribe itself doesn't have a trial. Doublecheck which product says the trial period is over.
  11. Hi Debbie: I'm handicapped and completely unable to use the footpedals, so ES was a godsend to me 7 or more years ago. Generally I find when the F keys don't work, it's becuase the F lock on the keyboard has been unengaged. I did a little test, and that may be one reason. Try engaging the F Lock on the keyboard and see if it works. Happy hunting. KRN
  12. Great, we're all looking forward to it.... Can we mark this post hot topic, so that others know to "watch this space"?
  13. I have ES version 4.10 installed on two computers, both running Windows XP. With both, when I attempt to load either msv or dvf, a file consumes 100% of the CPU, and takes forever to load, shutting out any other use of the PC. In a few of the times I was able to sit it out, it took well over an hour to load a 20 minute file. DVF might load slightly faster or consume slightly less of the CPU, but it's a distinction without a difference... it makes ES dysfunctional vis a vis the Sony extensions. As I noted in my earlier posts, and as I believe some others may have also noticed, the problem does not occur with the same files with either SwitchPlus or WavePad, so it's not a problem with the plug-in. I should add that I am not plugging a Sony recorder into my computer, but downloaded and saved the files to my HDD, as I do with all files, regardless, and then load into ES. Clearly one reason users are so terribly frustrated is that earlier versions of ES slipped msf/dvf files in like a hand in a glove. This time last year, I was able to load msv files of up to several hours, with no problem. I do very much hope this can be fixed soon. I've been using ES now for at least 5 years.
  14. What I found is that although Escribe won't load the dvf/msv files--such a shame for such a good product to fall down this way!--Switch and Wavepad do load them, and Switch Plus will convert them, so the problem can't reside with Sony's plug-in. Wavepad, even the unlicensed version, may also convert them to a low rate pcm, but I haven't played with it much. Good luck.
  15. Hi Canajun: Unless you've loaded a large number of files into ES at the same time, you can usually key the wav files in the /Documents and Settings/.../Current/ folder to the date they were created. You may have to go to the Windows toolbar, View, and pick "Choose Details." I use both "Date Created" and "Last Modified". In this case, Date Created is what you're interested in, and you can key that to the date you loaded the file. BTW I don't recommend using "Done." Even if you select a date when "Done" should delete the files, I don't find it reliable. Best to just delete files within ES when you're done with them, using Control Delete. Of course, if that's your only copy it's gone for good. I archive everything.
  16. Have you tried selecting an actual sound device, rather than "Default Sound Out" in your Settings? My OS is XP Pro, but whereas I couldn't load Sony files *at all* with v4.10, now they will load, however with much problems: they take longer thanplaying them, and tie up the 100% of the cpu usage, but it's a baby step. My point is that the change that allowed that baby step was to specify a sound device, rather than default. Note that both WavePad and Switch have zero problems loading the Sony files. Good luck, KRN.
  17. Thanks. It's a shame that problem cropped up. For now, since the plug-in clearly does work with Switch, if I have to, I'll convert the Sony files to wav and then load them into ES. ES would do that conversion anyway. It seemed as though some of the newer features for v4.09 and 4.10 were pushed out so fast that some of the older, existing features were forgotten about. I noticed for instance that there the new "notes" feature, but it doesn't say what it's for. Meantime, the typing pad--which I didn't use in any case--has disappeared, although it's still featured in the manual.
  18. What files are you having problems with? Did you see my post, with pvr reply on problems with the new version loading Sony files? Gosh--I hope there aren't more problems! In the short term, if the problem is with Sony's msv/dvf formats, I suggest downloading NCH's unlicensed version of Switch and converting the files to wav in there, and then loading into E-scribe. Hope that's some help until the guys get the bug fixed.
  19. With the Sony plug-in, I used to be able to load msv and dvf files with no problem (previous to v4.09). Now, since I reinstalled the plug-in and also installed E-scribe v4.10. When I tried to load an msv file, it used 100% of my memory, and took an hour to load a 9 minute msv file! After an hour I gave up trying to load a 15 minute dvf file. I tried several variations multiple times--reinstalling the plug-in, uninstalling and reinstalling E-scribe, with the same bad result. Now here's the funny thing: both formats play fine on WMP, and load perfectly into Switch and WavePad. Well, not so funny, but you get my meaning. Any help out there?
  20. A much easier way to permanently delete files, is to click on the file you want to be rid of in ES , and hit Ctrl Del (control delete). It'll prompt you that you will permanently delete it. Perhaps you can use the new "Notes" function to say when it can be deleted. KRN
  21. Hi Phyillis, I've also found the ES distortion as slow speed to be problematic over the years. My best solution, is to slow it to somewhere around 65-70%, ie not half-speed which is too distorted. I deal quite a bit with fast talkers, other English accents I'm not used to, and ESL (English as a 2nd language) speakers and you don't really need half-speed to understand most of the time. You can play with the range I suggested, it's just what I'm most comfortable with. I'd be interested to find how that works for you. --KRN
