I have the same problem with almost the exact error message as the first poster. The machine I'm having trouble with has a Creative Audio PCI card installed - the drivers are reported by Windows as working fine, and other programs (like Windows Media Player) play files properly. The driver is a WDM driver - so maybe that is what's causing the problem?
