  1. the above bug has been narrowed down / identified wavepad running under a non-priviledged user account has problems. apparently it does not remember changed settings / options, even for the current run. wavepad running under the Windows XP Administrator account (priviledged) does work. It can change the settings and save the file at a rate other than the default of 128 k bps workaround: use the Administrator account for NCH.COM.AU software. (tried Express Rip, similar problem) This is a major bug, there is no reason that WavePad should not work in a regular account. all the work is editing local files. the software should be updated to Windows XP standards which allow saving of settings under each account, priv or non-priviledged. for general safety and security protection against viruses and trojan horses and other nasty stuff, we generally run only on regular accounts (non-priviledged)
  2. goal: use Windows XP for ordinary work entirely from a user account, not priviledged (keeps down potential for system being zapped if encounter a virus / trojan / system bug) background: i had to use the system Admin account to transfer an MP3 file from a network/ Tje file was stored on a temp directory, and XP listed it as owned by the Administrator. Switched to a Regular (non-priv) account. Used WavePad to edit the MP3 file. clicked "file save" the contents of the file did not change It is correct that the file should remain the same The bug is that WavePad should report a file I/O error somewhere, as the user believes the file has been updated on disk when it has not.
  3. Goal: edit / trim voice recordings, people reading books. original files were already mp3, at 32 k bps, mono problem: used wavepad, very easy to trim the start chatter, and get the close where it should be, divide into chapters, etc. did a "File Save As", selected 32 kbps, selected mono, entered a different filename, selected the MP3 filetype the new file is almost four (4) times larger than the original! checked using WinXP tiles and another MP3 player, the bandwidth is set to 128 k bps ! this explains the factor of four, 128 over 32 k bps constant bitrate repeated this several times wavepad will NOT store the file at 32 k bps. environment: windows XP SP2, latest windows patches Wavepad 2.10 downloaded last week direct from NCH.COM.AU
