file won't convert

Hello: I have an audio file, .wav, that runs fine in Windows Media player 11 but it won't run on Wavepad. I am using Windows XP Home edition version 2002 with sp3. I am trying to filter out some background noises so that I can hear the audio. When I try to "batch convert with wavepad sound editor", I get "specified source format could not be read". I am very new to this so any help or starting point would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dave
