I had a similar phenomenon the first time I tried the trial version of WavePad. I futzed with it for about half an hour thinking that either I or WavePad was really stupid. Then I saw the small footnote on the CD jacket that said "Will not play on PC or Mac". I managed to pick what was probably the only CD on my shelf that had that problem....
