Only one problem: Nothing will play!

I've only had a macbook for several months now and just downloaded wavepad this week. Everything seems to work, I can open files or start a new one--but although a music file opens, when I press the play button nothing happens. I've tried mp3 and wav files, at first thinking that it was because I was trying to play aac files.

 

I'm running OS X ver 10.4.11, and have tried converting files using switch from mp3 to wav etc, just to get something to play...but nothing does.
