Can't select music in Wavepad?

We recently bought a new computer with Vista, and downloaded the free 3.05 version of Wavepad. I use it to make dance music longer by selecting a piece out of it, copying it, and pasting it in. But now I'm having a terrible time because the SHIFT-Right Key doesn't work for selecting.

 

Then for a while I selected by putting the cursor on the yellow marker line until I see the horizontal arrow, and I drag to the right and that would select a piece of music. But last night that no longer works either.

 

AM I doing something wrong (I had used Wavepad in the past, so I'm not a total newbie) or is this just not working with my new computer?

 

I did close the program and re-open it, with no results.
