Converting mp2 to mp3 (Macintosh)

My Pure Evoke-3 digital radio records sound files onto an SD card in .mp2 format, which I can then transfer to my Powerbook G4, running OS 10.4.1 via a card reader.

 

I can play these files in my iTunes if I simply change the suffix to .mp3! (It doesn't recognise them otherwise). "Switch" was the top result of a search with "Ask" ('Conversion programme for mp2 to mp3?'), and downloaded it very simply.

 

However, the programme will not convert the files from mp2 to mp3, and if I try to Play them from within the programme, I get the message ("It is possible the file format is not supported by this programme."

 

I see from the Help files that there is a further conversion facility for windows machines, but what about the Mac please?
