Playback issue and metering

Hello All-

 

Just downloaded and started using WavePad Editor for Mac (OS 10.6, Intel). I am having trouble playing back a file at the playhead. Playback usually happens anywhere I place the playhead except near the end of a file. Has anyone encountered this? Any suggestions? It is pretty frustrating, especially if I have a little bit of sound I want to trim at the end that needs multiple playbacks to make sure I am trimming in the right place. Thank you for your suggestions. Also, in an unrelated note: Is there a way to monitor how "hot" the dB is getting? It seems like the online tutorials show windows that have it, but I can't seem to find it in my version. Thanks again and sorry for the two-fold questions.
