Many thanks for the reply.  I tried what you suggested and it didn't seem to make any difference, but then I reverted to the 'if all else fails, start again' routine, by creating an audio track 3 and dragging the same audio files into it and then deleting track 2.  for whatever reason, this has worked!

I may well be doing something really stupid - I am very new to NCH software.  I have the videos' own sound in audio track 1 but wanted background music also.  So I started a second track and dragged a couple of songs onto it.  They don't play, or at any rate cannot be heard.  The mute is not on.  What am I doing wrong please??
