I'm doing lots of interviews for my PhD research, using a digital recorder. My sound files are all one-to-one interviews lasting from 20 mins to about 3hrs (usually broken up into smaller files because of interruptions, but could be merged into long files).
What sound file format and medium would anyone recommend for long-term storage and backups?
e.g. mp3 / wav / ogg
on CDs / USB stick / back-up portable hard drive (or all three!)
I'm currently working mainly with the proprietary format of my digital recorder, but since that's a borrowed item, it's not a long-term storage option!
Many thanks in advance for your replies.

Thank you very much for the advice. Presumably you recommend that format and codec because it is the best quality?
