  1. I'm using Express Scribe 5.10 on Windows XP.

I get the following message when I try to load a wmv file:

Video frame index generation failed. Couldn't open video file.

This happens when the download is just 15 seconds into the download.

My colleague who didn't upgrade to 5.10 is having no problems at all with this file. She said that she has an option to select file types, but I haven't found that option in this version. However, the Express Scribe home page says that it can play .wmv files.

    I'm grateful for any assistance.

  2. I was playing .mov files in v.5.01 without problems, but needed the capability of changing the start time clip. I was told how to do that, but the capability wasn't available my version. I've upgraded and now ES will not only not play the .mov files I had loaded, it won't load new ones.

    Thoughts?

  3. Thank you so much for responding. All I needed to do was to upgrade to the latest version of Express Scribe and watch the magic happen. I was able to get the text in a very short time. However, it was all garbage, which tells me that more training is required for the speech profile.

Speaking of speech profile, is there an easy way to import a speech profile into Express Scribe?

  4. I've been using Express Scribe for manual transcription, but want to use it for speech to text. I see in different areas, snippets of how to get this to work, but would like to have step-by-step instructions.

    I'm using Express Scribe 4.23.

If I understand it correctly, you must do the following:

    1. Have a speech profile loaded on the machine. (I recorded one using Voice Recognizer.)

    2. Before you load a dictation file into Express Scribe, you must click Settings>Other Settings from the main toolbar, and click the Other tab.

    3. Select the Use speech recognition engine checkbox, and select the engine (in my case, it was MS English (U.S.) v6.1 Recognizer).

    4. Click the User setup... button. On the dialog box, I selected user ID zero (0) since my dictation file was a .wav file and the speaker profile was created in something other than Express Dictate; therefore no user ID was automatically assigned.

    4. Click OK. The Express Scribe main page reopens.

    5. Now load the dictation file that you want to have converted to text. After it is loaded, it is displayed on the Express Scribe main page.

This is where all available information ends. Here are my questions:

o Do you double-click the dictation file after it has been loaded and let it run?

o How do you know that transcription is happening? I know that I read that it takes a long time to convert speech to text, but my recording was only 18 minutes long and I've been waiting for hours.

o Where is the area of the window where the text is supposed to display?

o How do you save whatever has been converted to text?

Thanks for any assistance. I hope that your answers can help other users as well.

  5. I did have someone create a speaker profile using MS Voice Recognizer and she exported it to me. I then placed it in the same location as my speaker profile (C:\Program Files\NCH Swift Sound\Scribe).

Are you saying that I can't use a speech profile created in this manner?

I'm not sure what you mean by "placed another speaker profile in the same location". You'd either need to create a new profile using the speech recognition software and get the speaker to train it on your PC, or use an export / import tool to transfer a profile from their PC to yours.

When a dictation arrives and speech-to-text is enabled, Scribe tries to match the speaker's user ID to one of the user-specific profiles. If no match is found, it uses the default profile. Using the default profile for a different speaker will decrease the accuracy of the speech-to-text conversion.

  6. I am on Windows XP.

I have created my speech profile, and see it in the User speaker profile drop-down list. I have other speech profiles that I would like to have available, but have not found a way to import them. I found the location of my default speech profile and placed another speaker profile in the same location, but it isn't available as an option in the Use speaker profile list. How can I add more speaker profiles? Once I add the profiles, do I have to give each one a user ID even though the profiles were created outside of Express Dictate?

    Thanks for any help.
