  1. Hi Nat,

    quite some logic there in your post - I'm not gonna go into all details of it in my response. However, I'd like to emphasize that "big file size" does not necessarily mean "lots to do for the computer"; in fact, it can be the opposite, because the pre-converted MPEG-2 (your large .avi) means that the editor does not have to convert / process the file on-the-fly while editing as it has to do with highly compressed formats (that your MP4 likely is; this is more about the contents / codecs, not the container).

    I'm a video edit newbie myself, but quite sure of that above. See more @ http://buildyourown.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/how-to-transcode-mov-files-using-matrox-codecs.

    I strongly encourage you to go for a setup that works. I wouldn't try editing my .MOV (H.264 + AAC audio) without converting it first into something less compressed.

  2. This is a performance issue.

    Please give us some details about your system and video file you try to edit in Videopad:

    - CPU (Processor) frequency and model;

    - Resolution of your video file (use MediaInfo tool if required);

    Also make sure you always connect your netbook to a power source when using Videopad.

    Netbook often decreases CPU performance when running on battery.

    Hi,

    I'm experiencing a similar / identical problem. The preview pane video is slow and falls behind the audio track. If I pause and resume the playback, the video jumps to the right frame and is in sync with the audio track, but starts to fall behind right away after resuming.

    The media file I'm editing / previewing is a 720p H.264 that I've converted to .avi using Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame HD codec, data rate 150Mb/s. Further details by your suggested MediaInfo further down *).

    I'm also using a laptop, but it's a Lenovo X301 with Intel dual-core U9400, 3GB of RAM, and an SSD hard drive, so quite a powerhouse for a laptop. It is a little low on SSD space - just 7GB free - so it's possible that things are getting tight there. Any recommendations? I've already cleaned the cache with Videopad. Any other places I should look into?

    I consider myself relatively experienced with PCs, so all tips, even detailed to the bone, are welcome. I try to avoid touching registers, though :)

    Thanks,

    JSK
