  1. Hello again,

I found a solution for playing previously non-playable .DSS files on my Windows ME computer.

I followed the suggestions from "milkduds" in the post of 11/24/2008 titled "Express Scribe and .dss files - resolved??" Thank you milkduds!!!!

    The short version is:

Load the .DSS file into a trial version of PowerPlayer, but don't actually play the file.

Tell PowerPlayer that you are done with the file by clicking "Typed."

PowerPlayer will convert the "Typed" file into a .Wav file that can be played by ES.

    Step by Step:

Download the Trial Version of ECS PowerPlayer at

    http://www.tvps.com/Products/ECS-PowerPlay...ew__ECS-PP.aspx

    and install it.

    Double Click to run PowerPlayer

Do this the first time you run Power Player:

    Click "Set" (Settings)

In General, put a checkmark next to Typed Files.

Put a dot next to Move (so the Typed Files are moved).

If desired, select a Directory for the Typed Files to be moved to.

To convert a .DSS file to a .WAV file that can be played by Express Scribe:

From the PowerPlayer main screen, clck Open

Change File Types to "All Audio Types" so you can see the .DSS files

Select the file you want, click Open

Wait as the file is being "processed."

DO NOT PLAY THE FILE OR YOU WILL RESTRICT THE FILE TO ONLY 31 SECONDS OF PLAY

Click "Typed." This tells PowerPlayer that the file has been typed. The file will be renamed to temp.wav and be placed in the directory chosen above during the Settings process.

Express Scribe should be able to play the WAV file.

I hope this helps anyone who has been struggling to get certain .DSS files to play. Thank you milkduds for pointing me in this direction.

Thank you Lauren and milkduds. This worked for me as well. Does seem to be a bit cumbersome. Now must save files in folder and then open in Power Play and then open in Express Scribe rather than opening file as email attachment directly into Express Scribe. Anyone come up with fewer steps as yet?

  2. i recently encountered a problem opening .dss files. this is actually the same problem which was already posted here and it here also that i had been looking for any solutions. i've tried all the suggested solutions and also tried to experiment with my little knowledge with computers as well but to no avail. finally, i decided to just download a dss file player. i downloaded this dss dj, unfortunately, this is a different media player and could not also open .dss files. while installing it, there appears a pop up window that i need to update the directx. there, from that point, i realized that maybe i really need to update the directx. so i discontinued the installation and instead updated the directx, then..... BINGO! .dss files just continued to be loaded in express scribe. i'm not really sure if this was the solution, but it did solve my problem. hope this will help to those who are still have problem opening .dss files.

I am also having problems loading DSS files. I do not know what the directx is. can you explain that to me?

    Thanks

  3. I have had the same problem. I have a transcription service and several of the MTs that work for me use the version 4.05. I had one file that was 18:58 long, and when loaded, was only 10:45. I got each and every one of my MTs to test it in their version, and each and every one had a file of 10:45 when loaded, although the download sizes were all the same. When the installed the old version that I sent them and loaded that file, it came up with the proper duration. There is something seriously wrong with version 4.05. If you need an old version, please let me know. I'll send it to you - it seems to be working perfectly. If you have found a solution to this that I don't know about, please let me know.

Hello. I am an MT and have used Express Scribe for years on my desktop. However, I just bought a laptop and downloaded Express Scribe (version 4.32) and can no longer load DSS files. I get the 0:00 reading for duration. I am thinking I need the older version. I would greatly appreciate it if you could supply the older version to me as well. Please let me know. Thanks so much. email is ralstons@hughes.net
