You need to lower the bitrate of your file. The bitrate affects the file size of your video output as well as its quality. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file size but the output quality will also be lowered. Click the Encoder Options button or the Bitrate Settings button after pressing the Build button in order to change the bitrates.

You can use a bitrate calculator to predict the output size of your file based on your audio and video bitrates and the total running time of your video.

Support for AviSynth scripts would add a whole new world of effects and transitions to VideoPad, including all those listed here.

Thanks for your reply Bruce, and thank you for your private recommendation to copy the effects parameters to the other clip. However, I don't think that is an efficient way to edit so I'll just wait for VideoPad to work out its Version 1 kinks before adding it to my editing toolbox.

VideoPad cannot but AviDemux and any editor that opens AviSynth scripts (such as VirtualDub) can. For AviSynth, after installation just open Notepad and type the following filter and save with .avs extension:

AviSource("mymovie.avi", audio="true").Reverse() for AVI movies,

or

DirectShowSource("mymovie.mpg", audio="true").Reverse() for AVI or non-AVI movies.

If the movie file and AVS file are not stored in the same directory you must specify the directory path of the movie, i.e.:

DirectShowSource("C:\My Documents\My Videos\mymovie.mpg", audio="true").Reverse()

You can save the movie in the other app and open it in VideoPad for further editing.

Unless I'm mistaken I've found an issue with VideoPad that makes it unusable for my workflow. It appears that when I want to apply a video effect there is no way to display any frame other than the first in the preview window. That is a problem for me since the first frame of the video is black.

If I split the video and choose to apply an effect to the clip on the right hand side, its first frame shows in the preview window. However, any effect I apply only applies to that clip, even though I'd like the effect to apply to the entire clip.

How can I preview the frame of my choice while applying an effect to the entire clip? Most other video editors give a preview of the current selected frame so you can instantly see the results.

The problem was that the default DPI scaling on my Vista system was set to 120 DPI instead of the usual 96 DPI. After changing it to 96 DPI all VideoPad screens displayed completely.

One of the posters at alt.comp.freeware just offered thanks for introducing him to VideoPad. He said it was just what he was looking for (or words to that effect).

See if you have better luck authoring and burning the slideshow with another freeware program.

Use VOB2MPEG to convert the VOB(s) in the VIDEO_TS folder of the DVD back to a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file.

Use Free Videos To DVD to re-author the MPEG2 file with menus/chapters if needed, and to burn it to DVD again.

Ok... I just downloaded Photo Stage. Now I need to save to my computer, in order to summon it from You Tube..

I know this is free, but do I have to download more things to get to save to computer?

YouTube is fairly lenient with the video types for uploading and prefers videos using codecs H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, which translate to MPEG2(DVD) or MP4(IPOD, MOV, PSP, ZUNE). Try saving your slideshow in one of those formats.

What did you use and what did you do to copy those huge AVI files to DVD? And why does your title include "CD"?

I recommend that you use VideoPad to create a DVD-compatible MPEG2 file and import it into the Free Videos To DVD app to author and burn the DVD. Free Videos To DVD supports menus/chapters and has a very easy-to-use interface.

13. make 'build' see a DVD burner. It currently sees CD/DVD burners as CD only and only allows option of build/burn to VCD.

VideoPad claims to burn to DVD and it recognizes my DVD burner ,but I haven't tried to burn a DVD with VideoPad. Wouldn't it be considered a bug if VideoPad can't burn to DVD? Frankly, I'd just use VideoPad to create a DVD-compliant MPEG2 file and use one of many freeware authoring and burning programs to finish the task.

Super DVD Video Editor is extremely buggy on my Vista system and I can barely get it to complete a single task all the way through. I no longer use it.

16. Output to mp3, to ogg or to Audio CD. That basically would enable one to rip the audio out of a video, which is probably used a lot.

There are plenty of XP/Vista freeware apps that can extract audio from video to MP3 or OGG. I'd rather see VideoPad save its energy for perfecting video editing tasks than see it take on new unrelated tasks.

Are there lots of us using this? Not much traffic in the forum.

I just sent a VideoPad announcement post to alt.comp.freeware. Perhaps that will help, given time.

I'm liking VideoPad overall but find some of its features inconvenient, or counterintuitive to what I'm used to with video editors. So I'm making the following recommendations that would make VideoPad the *perfect* freeware editor.

1.) Do not reencode video for cuts-only editing.

2.) Allow 3GP, FLV, MOV and MP4 formats to be saved to the hard drive.

3.) New footage clips should be added to the right of the previous clip in the sequencer instead of to the left, which is counterintuitive to most video editors.

4.) Allow dragging and dropping of footage clips to the sequencer timeline.

5.) Replace the sequencer timeline with a storyboard timeline like Photostage, which would make rearranging clips and adding transitions and effects more intuitive. There is no need to have what looks like two editing timelines.

6.) Display the timecode and frame number in the preview window while scrubbing the clips when using the timeline cursor or the mark-in or mark-out cursors.

7.) Do *all* splitting and mark-in/mark-out editing on the editing timeline, replacing the display of each footage clip with the one selected.

8.) Add the Slice button to the editing clip timeline instead of the sequencer timeline.

9.) Add an inverted triangle to the bottom of the timeline cursor to make it easier to grab, just like the mark-in and mark-out cursors.

10.) Lock the original clips in the footage section, and only add new clips after the "Add file(s) to footage" button is clicked.

11.) Allow the clips in the footage section to be rearranged via dragging and dropping, or with up/down buttons.

I'm a newbie to VideoPad but am impressed so far in spite of a learning curve. My problem is that some interface windows under the Build menu do not display all widgets and options. For example, the framerate dropdown widget on the right hand side is cut off. Can someone explain this discrepancy? I am using an Acer Aspire laptop with Vista Home Premium, Duo Core, 4 GB RAM, NVidia graphics. Thanks.
