Hi,

I just ran into an .m4a file that Express Scribe doesn't accept. I'd suggest adding that in the next version.

It seems there are new file formats coming out all the time, so I guess it goes without saying that each new version of ES should add as many new formats as possible!

No, it doesn't. Please select "Send Improvement Suggestion or Feedback" from Scribe's Help menu and post M4A file format support as a suggestion.

 

In the meantime, if you have Express Dictate then I believe it should be able to open your file. Otherwise, both Switch and WavePad should also be able to convert it to a format that Scribe understands.

Thank you for your reply. I'd never heard of an .m4a file, and when I couldn't it to load, I had to do some online research. That led me to Switch, which was, surprise, on the NCH website. Once I downloaded Switch, it took less than minute to convert the file to an .mp3. After that I had no problems loading it into Express Scribe and transcribing it. Thanks for another great program!

Does Express Scribe accept the .m4a file format? I just received one today, and it won't load.

I'm running version 4.10 because I get a lot of .dss files to transcribe and don't want to open a can of worms with .dss compatibility by upgrading to a newer version.

Ditto here. I've had this program for two years and have never been able to reconfigure hotkeys. "Copy time" is the one I really need and don't have the option for it.

I transcribe into Word in a separate screen, and have to copy & paste time codes. The fastest way I can figure out how to do it is I changed CTRL+F to "copy time". Now I can hit CTRL+F followed by CTRL+V (for the normal paste command) and I don't have to move my fingers all over the keyboard to copy & paste timecodes.

Here's how you reconfigure the hot keys, at least in 4.10. (I'm afraid to update my ES because of the whole .dss thing):

-Go to the "Control" button on the toolbar across the top

-Select "Hot Key Setup". This opens a box that says "Press Key"

-Type in the key combination you want - in my example, CTRL+F. This opens a box that says "Select Command", with a dropdown menu.

-Highlight "copy time" and click OK.

If anyone has any better ideas for timecodes, though, let me know!!

I have 2 projects that require time codes, and have 3 different, but related, questions:

1) Project 1 requires time codes starting at 0:00:00, when the first speaker's voice comes on. But there are 5 blank seconds at the beginning of the recording, so when her voice comes on the time code reads 0:00:05.0. Is there any way to set Express Scribe time codes to so that they start 5 seconds into the recording?

2) Project 1 asked about 100ths of a second on the time codes. Is that possible?

3) Project 2 comes on one file. But they made the file for me from 3 separate videotapes, each with its own time codes starting at 0. Is there a way to set Express Scribe time codes to go back to zero in the middle of a recording?

The Mini window does display, but it is only large enough to show the "X" used to close the window. The size of the window is about 1 inch long and 3/8 inch wide. The edges of the window are not active, so I cannot drag them to expand the window. Anyone know how I can make the Mini window function properly?
