  1. Last week ES was able to read DSS files, and suddenly this week it wasn't. Same version, same files. I understand NCH's explanation of how ES doesn't support the files--but why would it have worked last week and not now? The only notable things that had happened to my PC between time were updates of Windows and antivirus software, and my reinstallation of WMP. Could any of those things have disabled the codec somehow? At first I was able to access the files erratically, in a roundabout way, by loading them, saving them as Done, and then retrieving them. Then I could play them--sometimes--and the duration lengths were displayed, as they hadn't been before. However, the lengths were inaccurate; two files about 10 minutes long showed as 17:30 and 2:30 respectively. I tried all the suggested solutions in the other threads on this topic, and none of them worked. In fact some of them may have made it worse: when I cleaned out all the NCH and dss32 files I think I may have cleaned out some old file (from when NCH was still trying to accommodate DSS) that gave me the erratic form of access described above. I tried an earlier version of ES but it didn't work any better than the current one. I also tried to convert the files to WAV but the converter wouldn't read them either. The only program I can get to read them is DSS Player, from the company whose proprietary files they are. It also seems to be the only company with transcription program that guarantees to read the files. Does anybody have an idea why I suddenly lost the ability to read DSS files? And if there's any way of getting it back?
