OSX/Switch - when set to 'normalize', the converted files are useless

When I set the 'normalize' to ON (100%), the conversion from m4a to mp3 gave me tiny, 36kb files that are useless.

Anyone else have this experience? I've had it consistently on approx. 300 files that I converted last night. Woke up to find this issue this morning.
