Won't record from Mic

Hi all,

 

I've been trying to record sound from incoming audio. My computer does not have a line in, when you plug something in to the mic jack it turns off the on board mic. Sound tap will not pick up aidio from either of these. It was working recently, some of the MS updates were installed and now it won't do it. I've checked all of the properties I can think of and can't get it to work. help?
