Recovery or Undo Command for Mac

I had finished a transcript, and I hi-lighted the entire script and was going to copy it and then paste it into my word program. I accidently hit "paste" instead of "copy". Well, it pasted something else I had done earlier, where my transcript was and completely erased the transcript. I have a Mac, by the way, and have searched everywhere for this "lost" file , to no avail. Any suggestions on how to recover this, or at least some advice I can use in the future? Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have.

You probably could have pressed undo ([command] + [Z]) and it would have undone your pasting. As for recovery, I don't think you're going to get very far. I suggest using a proper word editor and backup regularly!
