Preview video has suddenly become unusably laggy

Last project went fine. Now, I try to edit clips and the preview video has the familiar "buffering" message. Before when that would happen, if I give it a minute or two it would disappear. But now it never goes away and the video all but freezes. The laptop I use is dedicated to VideoPad editing, and I've used it to make dozens of videos. It's not used for games or any other resource hog of a program. Nothing has been added or removed since my last project a couple weeks ago. I've since emptied the cache, uninstalled and reinstalled VP (13.43). Any ideas?

What's the project's length and resolution of the bulk of the source files?  Are they AVC or HEVC encoded?

Test this slightly older version.  Ignore any virus warning.  Is there a difference?

Take a few minutes to share your project.  We'll have a look.  The process is easy, quick and can be done privately.  Just follow these steps...

  •     Back up --- With your project on the timeline, click on MENU at the top-left.  Click FILE|BACK UP PROJECT FILES TO FOLDER.  Choose a folder and SELECT FOLDER.
  •     Upload ---  Use a free server - Google Drive, MS OneDrive, etc.* - to upload the saved, numbered FOLDER.    Do NOT upload the individual VPJ or export file.
  •     Get link --- Get a public link.  If using Google Drive click GET SHAREABLE LINK. If necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with the link can view"
  •     Share ---     Click COPY LINK | DONE.  Paste that link here, or click the folder at the top-right of this forum to message it privately to me.  It won't be shared.

          *    Before uploading, right-click the folder, click PROPERTIES.  Look at the File Size to confirm that it's not too big for the free space on the server.

Sorry about the delay in response, I'm having to address this issue in between stuff at work and home. The raw video is two takes of about 40 min long, and the finished project will be about 10 min. It was taken on a Samsung S23 phone. Hmmm, now that I pull up the details of the video, I see "HEVC" listed. I thought I shot it without compression. Could it be that simple? Just reshoot without HEVC? If so, that's doable, though I wish there was some way to convert back to an uncompressed file.

Just shot some test footage, checking to be sure compression was disabled. Now, where HEVC was listed before for the unusable footage, my test footage lists "H.264", and it plays perfectly in the preview window. I think that's it! I see I can use VLC to convert my original, HEVC project video into H.264, so I think the problem is solved.

Thanks for your help!
