Compressor not working - no compression in waveform

The NCH HELP dialogues discuss compression relative to Zero dbm. That is the highest level displayed as well. I believe that files lower than that value are not high enough to operate the compressor. Try amplifying the file to reach zero dbm and try again. For me, only the highest portion of the file is affected - which is what compession is about. In compression, only the highest amplitudes are held to the setpoint (i.e., 6 db of compression), while the rest of the waveform is below 6 db and unaffected. I also have observed that if the file is amplified so that it is above zero dbm (above the display) it is not clipped, and so it is part of the compressed portion. For other amplification purposes, the signal is clipped (i.e., if you wish to "chop" of the overshoot peaks) from an otherwise good audio file.
