Beams

Is there a non automatic way to add beams between notes?  I am attempting to write out Gregorian chant which does not use a regular time signature.  I need to be able to group sets of three (not triplets, just three consecutive eighth notes) and two.  All I can find are directions on how to apply beams using the automatic beam function.  With something called "automatic" beam function, is there something called "Manual" beam function?  This would seem to be a discrepancy in the software.  One online tutorial suggests using a group function from a drop down menu when you right click on a note...but there is no group function.  The software appears to not understand not actually using a time signature.  Can anyone help?
