MP4 clips display in distorted green and purple

I just purchased and installed VideoPad Professional 11.7. I am working with .mp4 clips created by NCH Debut and encoded with H264 at 1600x900. All of these clips display correctly in every other app I have used. But when imported into VideoPad, most of them display in shades of green and purple. They also appear to be superimposed with the same image, but stretched vertically. Very short clips of less than about 1 minute do not have the problem, but anything longer does. If the cursor is advanced through the clip, sometimes the display will become correct. There seems to be no problem with the audio.

I specifically chose VideoPad because I thought it would be the most compatible with NCH Debut. Now I am doubting my choice.

Has anyone seen this problem? Anyone have an Idea?

No other reports of that behavior have shown up.  What are your PC's specs:  CPU/GPU/RAM/free space on the drive?

Install this version and see if the issue persists.

Let's take a look at a few clips.  Or, better still, share the project.  Someone will check into it.  Just follow these steps...

  •     Back up --- With your project on the timeline, click on MENU at the top-left.  Click FILE|BACK UP PROJECT FILES TO FOLDER.  Choose a folder and SELECT FOLDER.
  •     Upload ---  Use a free server - Google Drive, MS OneDrive, etc.* - to upload the saved, numbered FOLDER.    Do NOT upload the individual VPJ or export file.
  •     Get link --- Get a public link.  If using Google Drive click GET SHAREABLE LINK. If necessary change "restricted" to "anyone with the link can view"
  •     Share ---     Click COPY LINK | DONE.  Paste that link here, or click the folder at the top-right of this forum to message it privately to me.  It won't be shared.

          *    Before uploading, right-click the folder, click PROPERTIES.  Look at the File Size to confirm that it's not too big for the free space on the server.

Did you test the above linked version?  Does this happen only on the timeline, only on the export, or both?  Upload and share your project, for inspection.

Please list your PC's specs:  CPU/GPU/RAM/ free space on the drive.

Borate, I sent a link via DM.

I downloaded and installed the link you provided, but it did not solve the problem. The problem happens in the clip preview and also the timeline. I exported the project with no modifications as a mp4 file. The resulting exported file looks fine, no problem. Furthermore, when I imported the output file back into the project as a clip, there was no problem. It looks fine.

Even though I already have three other video editing programs (not including the ones that came with Windows), I decided to purchase VideoPad because I thought it would be compatible with NCH Debut, which I am using to create the clips. I am disappointed to see that is not the case. After testing several video formats, I selected mp4 because it maintains a good quality image, while keeping a relatively small file size. I hope someone can figure this out.

My system specs:

Dell XPS 8700

Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz   3.40 GHz
Installed RAM    24.0 GB
214 GB free space on the c:\ drive
AMD Radeon 7500 series PCIe board

One thing I just noticed, if it helps. I said there are two superimposed images, one of them stretched vertically. The normal sized image is green, and the stretched image is purple.

Thanks for sharing.  Check our PM for a demo of what it looks like here.

Playback on the timeline or the Videopad export both render exactly the same as in the WMP or MPC-BE media players.  No purple, green or distortion.

Tested in two VP versions on two very different PCs.

This hints at a local issue, perhaps a conflict with the AMD Radeon HD 7500 series PCIe board card.  Try it on another PC if available.

Go to OPTIONS | EDITING tab and for the video processor choose OFF (re-encode) and see what result that produces.

OK, the video you sent me was apparently taken from the timeline in full screen mode, which is something I had not tried. I have only been viewing it in the preview pane, which is what I would use if I were actually editing the project. When I play it in full screen mode, the problem goes away. When I escape back to normal mode and the playback goes back to the preview pane, the problem comes back.

I assume that the playback looks ok on your system when played in the preview pane. I have a laptop I can try it on, but it is not as powerful as the desktop I have been using, and I would not want to use it for actual editing. ogbuggs, you reported the same problem. What kind of video board do you have?

The fact that the exported file does not have the problem when imported back into the program suggests that there is a subtle difference in the encoding. I might be able to adjust the parameters on Debut, but I would have to experiment. The exported file is 17K larger than the original clip, so there must be some difference.

Did turning off GPU (CPU only) under OPTONS | EDITING tab make a difference?

The sped-up demo video was a capture from the normal size preview window.   This is a GTX 1060 GPU.

Do test on the other PC and report back.  If it's good there then GPU is suspect.  In the past there have been some issues with AMD cards.

As a test, you might install this older version and see if the results are the same.   Many video changes have been made since its release.

Appears to be a PC-specific issue.  Discussion taken to PM.
