addressed Fading video effects in and out

I've just started using the video and audio effects, and I wondered if it is possible to have these fade in and out, like we do with the clips themselves on the track?

You can animate a TRANSPARENCY effect.  To fade up, move the 'opacity' slider to zero and click the green + sign on the toolbar, to set a keyframe.

In the effects window, drag the red-line cursor a little later, where the fade up is to end, and then move the slider to 100%.  That sets another keyframe.

Move the slider to near the end, where the fade out is to begin, and create another keyframe by clicking the + sign.

Finally, move the cursor to the very end, and the slider to zero.

                            The graph should look something like this...   

Presets are also available.  Just drag the blue line or the keyframe dots where you want them.  To delete a keyframe, right-click on it.

The closer the keyframes are to one another, the quicker the action between them.  If you make a mistake, press <ctrl-Z>, to backtrack step-by-step.

Most of the effects that you add to clips can be "faded out" ...reduced to zero/altered during the duration of the clip if you set up keyframes.

In principle you add the effect to the clip, adjust the effect, and then create a key frame. Move the effect (graph)  cursor along the graph and create a second keyframe. This fixes the effect in the clip for that interval. You can then move the cursor further along the clip effect graph, readjust the value and create another keyframe. 

Here is an example of a clip starting amber and then coming back to normal about  half way through.

Using keyframes you can control the intensity of an effect, its duration and the times where it starts and finishes.
