Lighten selection

How can I lighten a portion of an image?  e.g. if part of a photo has been underexposed, can I select it and lighten just that part?  I have not found the answer in Help  or Forums. I'm new to PhotoPad so I hope I'm doing this right. I admit I've only done a fast read on working within this forum, and I'm not that familiar with Forums anyway. I have a feeling I'm doing it wrong.

If you want to adjust the exposure of a particular area in the picture, first, you need to go to Select menu > use any of the selecting tools to select the area > once the area is selected > click the Color menu > click Exposure > you should get a message asking to if you want to apply the effect to the selected area or the entire image, please click Selected Region > in the right side panel, you will see the options for that particular effect > move the Exposure slider to the left or to the right to adjust it.
