Managing background when editing video

The checkerboard represents the transparent area, which is created when the video is resized.  If the video were overlaid above another track, that track's image would show through the transparent area.  In essence, picture-in-picture.  Add the SCALE effect to enlarge the clip to full frame.

Or use ZOOM instead, which should achieve that goal in with a single effect.
